The West Virginia Black Bears extended their winning streak to eight games with a 3-0 victory over the Staten Island Yankees on Saturday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. With the win, West Virginia improves to 19-16 this season while Staten Island falls to 19-15.
The two teams were scoreless through the first three innings before the Black Bears got on the board in the fourth inning. With one out, 3B Daniel Arribas and LF Ryan Nagle got things going with back-to-back singles. Arribas advanced to third on Nagle's single before CF Casey Hughston grounded out to first base, scoring Arribas to give West Virginia a 1-0 lead.
Staten Island was held hitless through the first 5.2 innings before SP Jonathan Brubaker struck out a batter in what looked like the last out of the sixth, but the runner reached first base on a dropped third strike. After the strikeout, the Yankees collected their first and only hit of the night. Brubaker got the third out of the inning on a soft groundout, ending Staten Island's threat to score.
The Black Bears added on two more insurance runs in the eigth inning, when DH Ty Moore led off the inning with a single and the proceeded to steal second base. Arribas and Hughston then walked to load the bases for 1B David Andriese. The left-hander ripped a single to right-field, scoring both Moore and Arribas to give West Virginia a 3-0 lead. The Yankees only had one runner reach base in the ninth inning, but he was left stranded to give the Black Bears their eighth straight win.
Brubaker earned his third win in his last four starts (3-3) after tossing 6.0 scoreless innings, striking out four and allowing only one hit. RP John Holdzkom made his second appearance as a Black Bear, working a quick 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts. RP Cesilio Pimentel pitched the last two innings and struck out three Yankees to earn his first save of the season. Staten Island starter Matt Borens received the loss (1-2) after pitching five innings and allowing one run and six hits.
On the offensive side, the Black Bears had three hitters with two hits. Moore went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored, Arribas finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and SS Erik Forgione went 2-for-3 as well. Andriese drove in two runs for West Virginia on a single to right in the eighth inning while Hughston also delivered an RBI.
