BURLINGTON, VT - The Connecticut Tigers (17-17) held on to win over the Vermont Lake Monsters (14-20) on Saturday night by a final score of 5-4. Connecticut has now won five of six games and has guaranteed themselves a winning road trip.

Connecticut led 4-0 but with the game tied at 4-4 in the top of ninth the Tigers regained the lead. With one out right fielder Joey Havrilak tripled off Dustin Driver (0-2) and scored one batter later on a single by catcher Shane Zeile to give Connecticut back the lead 5-4.

In the ninth things got a bit dicey against Tigers reliever Gerson Moreno (2-2) who had pitched a perfect eigth striking out the side. The first two men reached on singles and moved to second and third on a passed ball. With no outs designated hitter Vicmal De La Cruz hit a ground ball to second and was retired on the play. However, for some reason third baseman Trace Loehr (2-4, 3 RBI, 2B) broke for third on the play and got caught in a run down before being tagged out for a double play. The next batter was right fielder Seth Brown and he struck out to end the game.

Connecticut jumped in front with a four run second inning against Lake Monster starter Kevin Duchene. Leftfielder Jose Zambrano reached on error and moved to second on the play. The next batter, first basemen Will Allen (1-3, RBI, R) drove him in to make it 1-0. After a walk put runners on first and second catcher Shane Zeile (2-4, HR, 4 RBI) stepped to the plate and hit a three run home run to left pushing the Tigers lead to 4-0. It was the first home run of the year for Zeile.

With the score 4-1 Vermont would tie the game in the bottom of the sixth. Connecticut starter Spenser Watkins retired the first two batters in the inning but then ran into some trouble. Leftfielder Brett Siddall and catcher Nick Collins singled. The following man was Skye Bolt and he walked to load the bases. Watkins was lifted from the game and replaced by Nick Fury who allowed a bases clearing double to Loehr that tied that game.

The win went to Moreno after he pitched two shut out innings while striking out four on two hits. Watkins ended up allowing four runs all earned on seven hits in five and two third innings.

Driver was the tough luck loser after he threw five innings allowing just a single run. On the night Driver scattered three hits and struck out three while walking three.

Connecticut will play at Vermont tomorrow in the final game of a three game series. The first pitch on Sunday is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
