Auburn Doubledays News Release
LOWELL, MA - The Doubledays beat the Spinners 5-2 with three of their runs coming in an inning that included a Lowell error.
The Doubledays took the lead early on in the second. Ian Sagdal walked and Jakson Reetz were walked and hit by a pitch respectively to start the second. The duo then pulled off a successful double steal to put themselves on second and third. Luis Guzman brought in Sagdal with an RBI single and Max Schrock drove in Reetz with a sacrifice fly to give the Doubledays a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, the Spinners responded. Josh Ockimey walked and was brought in when Isaias Lucena doubled to center to pull the Spinners within one.
An inning later in the third, both teams scored once again. In the top of the third, Dalton Dulin led off with a walk. The infielder advanced to second on an error on the pitcher and third on a wild pitch before Sagdal hit a sacrifice fly to score Dulin and give the Doubledays a 3-1 lead.
The Spinners scored in the third thanks to a pair of extra base hits. Luis Alexander Basabe doubled to center with one out. Jeremy Rivera stepped up next and brought him in with a triple to center and the score after three was 3-2 Auburn.
After a scoreless fourth, the Doubledays added insurance. Dulin singled and Rhett Wiseman reached on an error by the shortstop. On a double steal attempt, Dulin was out at third while Wiseman was safe at second. Wiseman later scored when Sagdal hit an RBI single into right. Sagdal then came around to score on an RBI single off the bat of Melvin Rodriguez.
The final four innings were scoreless thanks in part to their bullpens. The Doubledays three relievers Grant Borne, Connor Overton, and John Feliz were impressive. Their combined line was: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, and 3 K's. Overton and Feliz specifically didn't give up a hit in the final three innings with the only base runner reaching on a walk in the ninth.
Grant Borne earned his first victory as a professional with the following line: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, and 35K's. Jose Almonte took the loss for the Spinners with the following line: 2+ IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, and 1 K.
The Doubledays look to complete the sweep Sunday at 3:05 PM. Taylor Hearn gets the start for Auburn against Dioscar Romero for Lowell.
