Cyclones Scrap 2-1 Win, Ending Losing Streak

NILES, OH - The Brooklyn Cyclones rode stellar pitching to a 2-1 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers Saturday night, ending a four-game losing streak.

Starter Gaby Almonte (4-2) turned in his best start of the season, throwing six shutout innings to earn the victory. He spent most of the evening working out of trouble.

Scappers' leadoff hitter Willi Castro singled and stole second to start the bottom of the first. With one out, Mark Mathias hit a groundball that struck base umpire John Durante. Mathias was awarded first but Castro was sent back to second. After Connor Marabell walked to load the bases, Almonte coaxed a fly out to center from Daniel Salters to strand three.

Mahoning Valley's next chance came in the third when Castro set the table again with a leadoff single. After Ka'ai Tom walked, Brooklyn's catcher Manuel Hilario threw Castro out on an attempted steal of third. A wild pitch sent Tom to third with one out and Mathias walked. Backed into a corner, Almonte struck out Nate Winfrey with a 3-2 pitch and Hilario gunned Mathias down at second to escape the frame.

The Cyclones managed only an infield hit in the first three innings against Scrappers' starter Shao-Ching Chiang (2-1). In the fourth, Chiang hit leadoff hitter Will Fulmer. The next batter, second baseman Vinny Siena, hit a sharp groundball that ate up Mathias at second - the first of three Mahoning Valley errors. After DH Brandon Brosher worked a walk to load the bases, right fielderHengelbert Rojas lifted a two-strike pitch to deep right for a sacrifice fly that chased Fulmer home to start the scoring. On Chiang's next pitch, first baseman Zach Mathieu drove in Siena on a line out to center, giving Brooklyn 2-0 lead.

Mahoning Valley threated again in the sixth after Nathan Winfrey smacked a leadoff double down the third base line. After Marabell's sacrifice bunt moved Winfrey to third, Almonte induced a weak groundball to first from Salters that failed to bring the run home. The right-hander then finished his night with a flourish by striking out Sam Haggerty - capping off six scoreless frames with his fifth strikeout.

RelieverJohn Magliozzi worked a scoreless seventh but allowed an unearned run in the eighth. Tom reached when Oswald Caraballo dropped a routine fly ball in left field and later scored on Winfrey's sacrifice fly.

Brooklyn's closer Alex Palsha also had to skate around danger in the ninth to earn his seventh save of the season. Salters singled to start the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With Austin Fisher up, Salters advanced to third on a wild pitch forcing the Cyclones to bring the infield in. But Fisher hit a ground ball directly to shortstop Alfredo Reyes for the second out, while the tying run remained at third. Palsha then finished the night by striking out Silento Sayles on a curveball.

Brooklyn won despite collecting just two hits all evening. Mahoning Valley stranded seven runners on base and went just 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Brooklyn is now 19-15, tied with Staten Island for first place in the McNamara Division.

Tomorrow, the Cyclones conclude their six-game road trip with the rubber game against the Scrappers. RHP Andrew Church will start for Brooklyn with a 4:05pm first pitch from Eastwood Field.
