Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Shane Zeile had a three-run homer in the second inning and then snapped a 4-4 tie in the top of the ninth inning with an RBI single to give the Connecticut Tigers a 5-4 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Saturday night at historic Centennial Field.
The Tigers took a quick 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Will Allen RBI single and two batters later Zeile lined his three-run homer off Vermont starter Kevin Duchene down the leftfield line for his first home run of the season for Connecticut. It was the league-leading 19th home run allowed by Vermont pitchers this season, including the sixth three-run homer, and the Lake Monsters are now 1-13 when the opponent hits at least one home run in a game.
Vermont did rally to tie the game, beginning with a Mikey White RBI single in the third inning to cut the deficit to 4-1. Then in the sixth the Lake Monsters loaded the bases after there were two outs on a back-to-back singles and a walk. That knocked Tigers starter Spenser Watkins out of the game and reliever Nate Fury quickly got ahead of Trace Loehr 0-2, but Loehr then drilled the next pitch off the rightfield fence for a three-run double to tie the game 4-4.
It stayed that way until the ninth when Joey Havrilak drilled a fone-out triple to rightcenter field and scored when Zeile grounded a single to left through the drawn-in infield for the go ahead RBI single. Vermont got back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the ninth inning, but a double play and strikeout ended the rally and gave Connecticut (17-17) its fifth win in the last six games.
Dustin Driver (0-2) came on in relief for Vermont in the fifth and allowed one hit over his first four innings before allowing the triple and RBI single in the ninth inning to take the loss. Watkins had given up just one run on five hits over the first 5 2/3 innings before coming out of the game after giving up the two hits and a walk in the sixth. Reliever Gerson Moreno struckout four Lake Monsters in two scoreless innings to pick up the victory.
Loehr was 2-for-4 with the three-run double for Vermont (14-20), while Seth Brown was 2-for-5 with a run scored. Zeile had two of the Tigers six hits, while Havrilak was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored.
Vermont will wrap up the homestand with the finale of the three-game series with Connecticut on Sunday starting at 5:05 pm. It is Hannaford's Help Fight Hunger Night and fans can receive one free grandstand ticket voucher to a future Lake Monsters home game this season with the donation of at least one non-perishable food item.
