Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
The Scrappers (15-20) went 4-2 on their six-game homestand after taking the third game of the series against the Brooklyn Cyclones (19-16) by a final of 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at Eastwood Field.
Going into Sunday's game, Mahoning Valley was 0-6 in Sunday games. They not only secured their first Sunday win, but they've won four of their last series. They took two of three from Lowell, Williamsport, Staten Island, and now Brooklyn. Auburn took two of three from the Scrappers in the middle of that stretch. The six runs they scored is also a season-high in runs scored for them at Eastwood Field this season.
The Scrappers jumped out early on a solo home run from Willi Castro. It was Castro's first home run of the season. Mahoning Valley added another run in the bottom of the third when Ka'ai Tom scored on an error by Michael Bernal in right.
Mahoning Valley scored three in the bottom of the fifth. Daniel Salters singled, Nate Winfrey singled, and then Austin Fisher singled. All three came to cross the plate in the inning.
Casey Shane (1-2) takes the win. He went five innings giving up three hits and one run, while walking one and striking out two. The Scrappers bullpen was solid too. Cortland Cox and Devon Stewart combined to go four innings giving up just two hits and striking out four. The Mahoning Valley bullpen in its last 13 innings has allowed seven hits, one run, one walk, and has struck out 16. Mark Mathias extended his hit streak to eight games, while Salters extended his to nine.
The Scrappers have an off day for travel on Monday before starting a six-game road trip with three in Connecticut against the Tigers, and then three in Tri-City against the ValleyCats. First pitch on Tuesday is at 7:05, and Jared Robinson will take the hill for Mahoning Valley.
