Hudson Valley Drops Close One to State College

Wappingers Falls, NY (7/26/15)- The Hudson Valley Renegades fell to the State College Spikes by a score of 5-3 on Sunday evening at Dutchess Stadium. With the result, Hudson Valley falls to 18-17 while State College improves their record to 18-17.

The Renegades scored all three of their runs of the night in the bottom of the first inning. Shortstop Michael Russell and designated hitter Joe McCarthy each singled with one out and with third baseman Hector Montes up, Russell stole third and scored on a throwing error on State College's catcher Riley Drongsen. As Russell scored, McCarthy, who stole second behind the play, came all the way around to score as well.

Then with two outs in the first, right fielder Manny Sanchez struck out but reached first base on a wild pitch. After moving to third base on a single from first baseman Nic Wilson, Sanchez scored as center fielder Angel Moreno reached first on a wild pitch after striking out, giving the Renegades a 3-0 lead.

The Spikes cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the third inning on a two-run double by shortstop Leobaldo Pina. In the top of the fifth inning, State College tied the game as center fielder Craig Aiken, who singled earlier in the inning, came around to score on a throwing error on a bunt single from left fielder Mike Pritchard.

That ended the day for Renegades starting pitcher Cameron Varga as he tossed five innings and gave up three runs and two earned runs. Reese Karalus threw three innings of shutout baseball in relief of Varga and allowed just one hit.

The Spikes took the lead in the top of the ninth inning as with two outs, Pina hit his second two-run double of the day, scoring pinch runner Thomas Spitz and Pritchard. Pina finished the day going four-for-five with four RBI.

Jacob Evans (1-1) took the win for State College in relief after tossing three scoreless innings. Pedro Echemendia picked up his third save of the season when he pitched a three-up, three-down bottom of the ninth inning. Diego Castillo (1-2) took the loss for the Renegades after giving up two runs in the ninth inning.

Notes: After going two-for-four on the evening, Joe McCarthy extended his hitting streak to five games, one game shy of his season high as he had a six-game hit streak between July 11th through 17th. During this current streak, McCarthy is hitting .428 (9-21) with six RBI.
