Auburn Doubledays News Release

LOWELL, MA - The Spinners scored at least one run in every inning from the fifth to the eighth to beat the Doubledays 6-5 in the series finale.

Early on in the top of the second, the Doubledays took the first lead of the day. With one out, Kelvin Gutierrez doubled into left for the first hit of the game. Gutierrez then scored when the next batter Ian Sagdal drove him in with a double to right. With Sagdal on second, Randy Encarnacion launched a two-run homer to left that sailed just right of the foul pole to give the Doubledays a 3-0 lead.

After Taylor Hearn retired the side in order in the bottom of the second, Auburn added another run in the third. Victor Robles led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. Robles then advanced to second when Dalton Dulin reached on an error by Lowell's second baseman. Rhett Wiseman dug in next and walked to load the bases. After that, David Kerian ground into a double play that brought in Robles from third and gave the Doubledays a 4-0 lead.

Neither team scored in the fourth, but the Spinners finally got on the board in the fifth. Austin Rei led off the inning with the first homer of his professional career. After Jeremy Rivera struck out, Luis Alexander Basabe singled and then stole second and third. Andrew Benintendi then popped out and Taylor Hearn, the Doubledays starter, was replaced by Matt Pirro. Tate matheny stepped up next and drove in Basabe with a double to put the score at 4-2. With Matheny on second, Chad De La Guerra singled to right to score Matheny and pull the Spinners within one.

An inning later in the sixth, Lowell tied it up. Tucker Tubbs walked and then advanced to second when Hector Lorenzana grounded out. Tubbs then scored when Rei doubled into left.

In the seventh, both teams got on the board. Edwin Lora led off the seventh with a solo homer over the left center field wall that barely snuck over to give the Doubledays a 5-4 lead. But the Spinners tied it up with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Victor Acosta walked and scored when Tubbs tripled to left to tie the game at five.

The Doubledays had a big opportunity in the top of the eighth. Kelvin Gutierrez singled on a ground ball to shortstop and then moved over to third when Ian Sagdal singled into center. On that same play, Andrew Benintendi, Lowell's center fielder, tried to throw out Gutierrez going to third, and when his throw missed wide, Sagdal advanced to second. Unfortunately for the Doubledays, the next three hitters all struck out and Gutierrez and Sagdal were stranded.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Spinners took their first lead of the series. With two outs, Basabe doubled to right. Basabe then scored when Benintendi hit a grounder to second that hit off Dalton Dulin and sailed into right.

Down 6-5 heading into the ninth, the Doubledays weren't able to rally. Dulin walked with one out, but was stranded on first as Auburn fell 6-5.

Ryan Brinley took the loss for the Doubledays with the following line: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, and 2 K's. Trevor Kelly earned the victory for the Spinners with the following line: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, and 4 K's.

Auburn has Monday off before a six-game home stand starting Tuesday.
