West Virginia Black Bears News Release

The West Virginia Black Bears extended their winning streak to nine games and completed the sweep of the Staten Island with a 4-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Monongalia County Ballpark. With the victory, West Virginia now improves to 20-16 this season while the Yankees fall to 19-16.

The Black Bears dug a hole early in the game, allowing Staten Island to score two runs in the first inning on four hits and leaving two runners left on base. West Virginia didn't stay down for long though after answering back in the second inning. C Daniel Arribas led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch and then was advanced to second on a ground ball. RF Ryan Nagle then came to the plate with one out and ripped a deep double left center, scoring Arribas from second. After Nagle advanced to third on a groundout, 1B David Andriese continued to stay hot at the plate, ripping an RBI single through the left side. 3B Mitchell Tolman kept the Black Bear offense rolling with a hustle triple to right center, scoring the third run of the inning.

West Virginia added on an insurance run in the fifth inning when Tolman delivered a leadoff single and then scored on a double off the left field wall by SS Kevin Newman. The two teams stayed scoreless until the ninth inning where Staten Island threatened. RP Kevin Keselica gave up three consecutive singles to allow the Yankees to load the bases. Staten Island got a run off of a sacrifice fly to left field but the Yankees were held at bay after Keselica forced a game-ending double play.

SP Bret Helton earned the win (2-4) after giving up two runs in the first inning but settled in from that point. In 5.0 innings pitched, the right-hander struck out three batters and only allowed the two runs scored in the first. RP Nick Hibbing entered the game in the sixth inning and pitched 2.0 scoreless frames followed by a scoreless eighth by RP Daniel Zamora. Keselica earned his third save of the season after securing the win for the Black Bears in the ninth.

The Black Bears were led offensively by Tolman and Nagle who each had a 2-for-3 day at the plate with an RBI a piece. The Yankees outhit the Black Bears by a 10-7 margin but the West Virginia pitching staff forced Staten Island to leave seven runners left on base.

The Black Bears will now go on a six-game road trip, first with three games against the Tri-City ValleyCats followed by a series with the Connecticut Tigers. Against Tri-City, the Black Bears will send RHP Dario Agrazal to the mound on Tuesday, RHP Luis Paula on Wednesday and RHP Seth McGarry will pitch the series finale on Thursday.
