Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners entered Sunday evening having lost four straight and eight of nine. With Inspiration Night at LeLacheur Park, featuring inspirational guests from across the state highlighted by Pete Frates Bobble Ice Bucket Giveaway with the Frates family in the house the Spinners rallied from a four run deficit for an exciting 6-5 win over the Auburn Doubledays to conclude the homestand.

Auburn (16-19) got on the board in the second after back-to-back doubles were followed with a towering blast down the left-field line. After some discussion it was ruled a two-run home run by Randy Encarnacion to give the Doubledays a 3-0 lead.

The Doubledays would plate a fourth run in the third without the benefit of a hit. Victor Robles was hit by a pitch and a Chad De La Guerra error put the first two runners on. A walk would load the bases with a run coming in on a double play to push the lead to 4-0.

Lowell (18-18) threatened in the third, loading the bases for the 2-3-4 hitters with nobody out. However pop outs by Andrew Benintendi and De La Guerra sandwiched a strikeout by Tate Matheny and the Spinners came up empty.

The Spinners did break through in the bottom half of the fifth inning when Austin Rei led off the inning with his first professional home run. Basabe would single with one out, stealing both second and third, before scoring on what appeared to be a home run by Matheny, but was ruled a double on the field. De La Guerra's RBI single brought the Spinners within a run at 4-3.

Lowell would tie the score in the sixth inning after Tucker Tubbs led off the inning with a walk, scoring on Rei's RBI double.

Auburn would re-take the lead in the seventh when Edwin Lora's lead-off solo home run off Logan Boyd gave the Doubledays a 5-4 lead. The Spinners quickly evened the score in the seventh on a two-out triple by Tubbs.

Lowell's finest work would come in the eighth inning after the Doubledays put runners on second and third with one out. Trevor Kelley came out of the bullpen to record two strikeouts setting the stage for the Spinners to pull ahead in the bottom half of the inning. A two-out Basabe double led to a run when a Benintendi groundball was booted by Dustin Dulin allowing Basabe to race home with the winning run.

Kelley closed the door in the ninth, picking up back-to-back strikeouts after a one-out walk to close out the win.

Offensively Rei and Basabe each had three hit games, with Rei picking up a pair of extra-base hits and two RBI.

After the three run second, Dioscar Romero settled down, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four. Logan Boyd struck out four over 2.1 innings of relief, allowing one run on five hits. Kelley (1-0, 0.00) picked up the win with a scoreless 1.2 innings, striking out four.

The Spinners now travel to Williamsport on Monday to begin a six-game trip Tuesday with three-game sets with the Crosscutters and State College Spikes. First pitch in Williamsport on Tuesday night is at 7pm.
