Brooklyn Ends Road Trip with a Dud, Falls 6-2

NILES, OH - JULY 26, 2015 - The Cyclones closed out their six-game road trip with a 1-5 record after dropping the rubber game to Mahoning Valley on Sunday at Eastwood Field by a 6-2 score. The Scrappers knocked Brooklyn right hander Andrew Church (1-1, 3.12) around early and often, putting Brooklyn in a hole they were unable to climb out of.

After rain delayed first pitch for an hour, Mahoning Valley got on the board right away as shortstop Willi Castro led off the first with a home run over the right field fence. Singles from Ka'ai Tom and Daniel Salters put runners on first and second with two outs but Church got Nathan Winfrey to pop out, keeping the game at 1-0. The Scrappers threatened again in the second when they landed runners on second and third with just one out. Church would work himself out of trouble again, inducing a pop out from Castro before getting a lineout to end the inning.

Brooklyn had a golden opportunity to tie the game when Hengelbert Rojas led off the top of the third with a double. Rojas reached third on a sacrifice fly and Tucker Tharp drew a two out walk but a fielder's choice would get Mahoning Valley starter Casey Shane out of the jam.

In the bottom of the inning, Tom led off with his second hit of the game. Mahoning Valley designated hitter Mark Mathias popped a single of his own into right field but an error by right fielder Michael Bernal allowed Tom to score and Mathias to reach second. With two outs, back to back walks loaded the bases before Church escaped by inducing a fly out. At the end of three, it was 2-0 Scrappers.

Brooklyn would answer in the fourth after Vinny Siena began the inning with a single and Bernal reached on an error. Third baseman David Thompson grounded into a force out but a throwing error from Castro allowed Siena to score, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

After retiring the Cyclones in order in the fifth, Shane was removed after a strong outing. The right hander left the game with a lead and would end up with the win after surrendering just one unearned run on three hits and one walk while striking out two over five innings.

The fourth was the only inning that Mahoning Valley failed to record a hit off Church but the Scrappers continued their offensive assault in the fifth. After Salters and Winfrey led off with singles, a sacrifice fly moved the runners to second and third with one out. That would mark the end of the line for Church, who was removed for RHP Dawrin Frias. A single knocked in Salters before a wild pitch plated Winfrey, making it a 4-1 game. This closed the book on Church, who took the loss and finished the game allowing nine hits and walking three and striking out two over 4.1 innings and being charged with four runs, all of them earned. But the Scrappers weren't done as an RBI single from Jodd Carter made it a 5-1 game before Frias worked out of the inning.

Brooklyn began trying to chip away in the sixth off new Mahoning Valley pitcher Cortland Cox. After a leadoff walk for designated hitter Will Fulmer, back to back strikeouts left him on first with two men down. Thompson then stung a double into the right center field gap, scoring Fulmer and cutting the Scrapper lead to 5-2.

RHP Luis Mateo came on to pitch a perfect sixth for the Cyclones but would yield an insurance run in the seventh. A leadoff walk, a fielder's choice and a single from Austin Fisher would put runners at the corners with one out before Carter collected his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to make it a 6-2 game.

That would be it for scoring on Sunday as Cox tossed a scoreless seventh before giving way to Devon Stewart, who tossed two clean frames to end the game. Brooklyn mounted just one hit over the final three innings and managed only five hits on the night.

After an off day Monday, The Cyclones begin a three game commuter series with Hudson Valley on Tuesday. RHP Chris Flexen (0-1, 10.80 ERA) will make his first start of the season as a result of injuries to LHP Blake Taylor and RHP Matt Blackham, who will each miss their next starts. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM at Dutchess Stadium. Brooklyn returns home on Wednesday, July 29th to face the Renegades as Tyler Badamo (1-4, 3.59) takes the mound for the Cyclones. The first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a Juan Lagares Bobble Glove courtesy of NYU Lutheran.
