Connecticut Defeats Vermont 4-2 In Series Finale

BURLINGTON, VT --- Will Allen went 3-for-4 with three runs, two doubles and a solo homer, while Shane Zeile's RBI single in the top of the seventh innng snapped a 2-2 tie as the Connecticut Tigers beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 4-2 in the finale of the three-game New York-Penn League series at historic Centennial Field on Sunday evening.

Allen led off the seventh with his second double of the game and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on Zeile's RBI single to left for a 3-2 Tigers lead. Connecticut added an unearned insurance run later in the inning when Cam Gibson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home Zeile. Vermont got the bases loaded in the ninth inning with two outs, but Jake Shull got Chris Iriart to pop up for the final out.

Vermont manufactured a run in the first as Seth Brown led off with a walk, advanced to second on a groundout, stole third and scored on a Iriart RBI groundout. Allen tied the game in the second with a one-out solo homer off Lake Monsters starter Bubba Derby, who allowed just the one run on two hits with three strikeouts in three innings. Skye Bolt gave Vermont back the lead in the fourth with a solo homer to right field, his second home run of the season and a league-leading 21st home run for Vermont overall.

The Tigers tied the game 2-2 in the fifth on back-to-back doubles from Allen and Joey Havrilak off of Vermont reliever Chris Kohler (0-2), who allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts over five innings to take the loss. Connecticut reliever Chase Edwards (4-3) allowed one run (the Bolt homer) on two hits with two strikeouts over three innings of work to earn the victory, while Shull picked up his fifth save.

Iriart was 2-for-5 with a double for Vermont (14-21), which falls seven games under .500 for the first time this season and ends the homestand 2-4 after losing two-of-three to both Connecticut and Auburn.

After an off day on Monday the Lake Monsters head out on the road for six games, starting with the first of a three-game series at State College against the Spikes on Tuesday night. Vermont will return to historic Centennial Field August 3-8 for a six-game homestand against the Staten Island Yankees and Brooklyn Cyclones.
