Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Salt Lake City, UT - The Tacoma Rainiers (20-35) defeated the Salt Lake Bees (30-26) by a 13-6 final on Wednesday night in Salt Lake City, snapping a four-game skid. The Rainiers were a run shy of a season-high, and two hits shy of a season-high, with 15. Tacoma will look to take this three-game series on Thursday in a rare PCL rubber match, aiming for a winning road trip (4-4).

The Rainiers started early in the first inning; a bases-loaded walk by Mason McCoy scored the first run of the game. Two batters later, newly-acquired Scott Heineman hit Tacoma's first grand slam of the season, his first RBI, home run and hit this season, extending the lead to 5-0.

Salt Lake would respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the second, a Magnerius Sierra sac fly scored Jose Rojas (2B), cutting the Tacoma lead to four.

McCoy drove in two more runs with a double that scored Marcus Wilson (BB) and Alex Blandino (BB), increasing the Rainiers lead to six runs in the third. Through the first three innings the Rainiers drew eight walks and were dealt 10 free passes for the game, two short of a season-high.

Left-hander Tommy Milone logged five innings for Tacoma, in a winning decision (2-0). The southpaw scattered four hits and a walk for only a single (earned) run. The veteran of 11 Major League seasons struck out five, and the Rainiers are 4-2 when he pitches (6 GS).

Tacoma would continue to build their lead with a single from Wilson that scored Heineman in the top of the sixth, extending the lead to 8-1.

The Bees would respond in the bottom half of the sixth with three solo home runs; Matt Thaiss (5), Jose Rojas (1) and Sierra (6) all went deep against RHP Ken Giles, who pitched two-thirds of an inning on a rehab assignment.

Heineman continued to produce in his Rainiers debut, with a two-run single in the seventh. With those RBI he set the club-high for this season, with six in a single game. Jarred Kelenic extended his hitting streak to a Rainiers season-long 13 games with an RBI double scoring Heineman. Brian O'Keefe would tally an RBI as well, driving in the 12th Rainiers run of the night before the seventh was over.

In the visiting eighth, Tacoma would add their 13th run on McCoy's second double of the game. In the home eighth Rojas homered for the second time during this game and season, closing the night's scoring.

Matt Brash would finish the evening on the mound for the Rainiers by striking out the side in order, extending his scoreless streak to seven appearances (7.0 IP) dating to May 25 (4 H, 2 BB, 12 K).

The series finale will be an early start on Thursday at Smith's Ballpark, a 12:05 MT/11:05 PT first pitch in Salt Lake City. The Rainiers will start RHP Darren McCaughan, against Bees lefty Jhonathan Diaz.
