Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Charleston, WV - June 9, 2015) - The West Virginia Power were defeated by the Savannah Sand Gnats 9-1 on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park. Savannah used a pair of four-run innings to down West Virginia in game one of the series in Charleston.
The game started off well for the Power thanks to a run in the first inning. Pablo Reyes hit a home run to left field to give the Power an early lead. For Reyes, it was his team-best sixth home run of the season.
Yeudy Garcia struck out two in the first inning and worked the Sand Gnats down in order in the third but the all-star ran into trouble in the third. After allowing a leadoff single and a walk, Luis Guillorme hit an infield single allowing one run to score but Savannah got another run on the play thanks to a throwing error by the Power defense. Two batters later, Eudor Garcia hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to right to make it a 4-1 game.
Savannah struck for four more runs in the fifth inning off reliever Jake Burnette. Eudor Garcia hit his second home run of the game with a runner on to give the Sand Gnats a 6-1 advantage. Tomas Nido made it 7-1 with a sacrifice fly and Patrick Biondi hit an RBI double to give the Sand Gnats the seven-run lead.
In the sixth the Sand Gnats added another run. John Mora pulled a triple to score Wuilmer Becerra, which gave the Sand Gnats a 9-1 advantage.
Yeudy Garcia (4-4) suffered the loss after he surrendered four runs on five hits over four innings of work. Casey Meisner (6-1) earned the win after seven innings of one-run ball.
