Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - A return home on Tuesday night couldn't cure the Greenville Drive's June woes, as the Augusta GreenJackets defeated the Drive 5-4 in the series opener at Fluor Field. The Drive have now dropped seven games in a row and move into a tie for first place with Savannah.
The GreenJackets (28-29) pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts on the night, with most of the damage done by starter Sam Coonrod, who dominated the Drive offense with 10 strikeouts in seven innings while allowing only two hits and one run.
The Drive (31-27) struck for their only run against Coonrod in the third to take a 1-0 lead. Mauricio Dubon lined a triple to the right field corner with one out, and Derek Miller followed with an RBI groundout.
Augusta scored single runs in the fourth and fifth against Greenville's Reed Reilly (3-3) to take the lead for good. Aramis Garcia knotted things up in the fourth when he smacked a solo homer down the left field line, and a pair of Drive errors in the fifth plated the go-ahead run.
Reilly gave the Drive a quality effort despite taking the loss, as he allowed two earned runs in six and two-third innings of relief with no walks and five strikeouts. Edwin Escobar threw the first inning for the Drive while on a major league rehab assignment and set down Augusta in order.
Augusta and Greenville traded single runs in the eighth and two runs in the ninth. Garcia's RBI triple in the eighth scored Johneshwy Fargas to make the score 3-1, and a Joseph Monge RBI double in the bottom half cut the lead to one.
The ninth saw the GreenJackets receive crucial insurance runs courtesy of RBI hits from Dylan Davis and Jeremy Sy. Javier Guerra's two-run single plated a pair of runs in the bottom half, but Reyes Moronta escaped further damage and recorded his fifth save.
Fargas had three hits to lead Augusta, while Davis, Garcia and Jonah Arenado added two hits apiece. Jordan Procyshen paced Greenville with two hits, and Guerra drove in a pair.
The series continues on Wednesday night at Fluor Field at 7:05 PM. A pair of southpaws will square off, as the Drive's Dedgar Jimenez (3-2, 3.90) and the GreenJackets' DJ Snelten (0-1, 15.43) take the mound.
