Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds won their third straight game with a 7-1 victory in the series opener against the Hagerstown Suns. The Shorebirds (27-29) got off to a quick start with four runs in the first and never looked back.
Delmarva jumped in front early by capitalizing on a Hagerstown error. With two outs, David Masters misplayed a hard hit grounder from Jomar Reyes. The ball skipped under Masters' glove allowing one run to score and extending the frame. Later, Elier Leyva ripped a bases-clearing double to give Delmarva a 4-0 advantage.
John Means delivered yet another quality start for Delmarva, tossing six shutout innings on Tuesday night. Means scattered six singles, while walking one batter and recording five strikeouts. With the victory, Means improved to 5-2, leading the Shorebirds in wins.
The Shorebirds scored twice more in the fifth with an RBI single by Jomar Reyes and a sacrifice fly from Leyva. T.J. Olesczuk hit a solo home run in the eighth, his second long ball since joining Delmarva last Thursday. In five games with the Shorebirds, Olesczuk is 10-for-19 with ten RBIs.
Hagerstown's only run came on a RBI single by Matt Reistetter in the seventh. The Suns loaded the bases against Nigel Nootbaar in the eighth, but Delmarva escaped the jam. Max Schuh stranded the runners with a popout in foul territory, keeping the Shorebirds' 7-1 lead safe.
After being named to the South Atlantic League All-Star Game earlier in the day, Conor Bierfeldt proved his worth with a 2-for-4 day. Bierfeldt belted a double and a triple, tying the league lead for both doubles (17) and extra base hits (26).
Delmarva will try for their second straight series win with Wednesday's game two. Right-hander Lucas Long (0-1, 4.50) will make his first start of the season, while Luis Reyes (2-3, 5.08) takes the hill for Hagerstown. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
