Sarnia Scores 4 in the Second to Beat Mississauga 6-1

The Sarnia Sting broke open a close game, scoring four times in the second period and cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Mississauga Steelheads in front of 3,014 at the Hershey Centre.

Despite only 10 shots in the middle stanza, Brandon Lindberg, Sasha Chmelevski, Matt Mistele and Ryan McGregor scored to give the Sting a 5-0 lead and they never looked back. Jordan Kyrou opened the scoring for Sarnia in the first and Nikita Korostelev, wrapped up the scoring in the third period for the Sting. Justin Fazio stopped all but one of the Steelheads 28 shots, allowing the lone goal to Josh Burnside in the third period, on the power play. Mississauga used both Jake Flinn, who started and gave up five goals on 18 shots through the first forty minutes and Joseph Murdaca in the third, in net. Murdaca, finished with 8 saves on 9 shots.

The offensive onslaught was led by Mistele, with a goal and two assists. Lindberg, McGregor and Kyrou, each had a goal and an assist. Salinitri, contributed a pair of assists.

After killing of an early penalty for tripping, the Sting strike first as Jordan Kyrou wrist shot beats Flinn on the blocker side at 6:48 with the assist credited to Troy Lajeunesse and Matt Mistele. The goal was a team milestone, number 100 on the season for the Sting. Fazio stops the best scoring chance for Mississauga on a penalty shot from Thomas Lattavo with under seven minutes remaining in the opening period. Sarnia lead 1-0 after the first twenty minutes despite being outshot by the Steelheads 10-8.

Sarnia, made it 2-0 at 9:52 of the second period. Jacobs, on a nice rush down the right wing, let go a shot that Flinn stopped but in doing so let up a big rebound and Lindberg made him pay by putting the puck into the net. Jacobs and Ryan McGregor drew the helpers. The score went to 3-0 following a wrist shot from Chmelevski that beat Flinn five hole, with less than five minutes left. It was Chmelevski seventh on the season and it was unassisted. Sarnia than blew things wide open with two more goals from Mistele, his 13th, at 17:43 and McGregor potted his fifth, 73 seconds later. Kyrou and Anthony Salinitri were awarded the assist on the goal from Mistele, while the assist on the McGregor's goal went to Lindberg and Kevin Spinozzi. Sarnia scored on four of their 10 shots in the period, as they outshot Mississauga by a slim 10-8 margin.

Joseph Murdaca replaced Flinn in net for the Steelheads, to start the third period. Josh Burnside broke up Fazio's bid for a shut-out early in the third period, scoring a power play goal at 4:49. Stefan LeBlanc and Nathan Bastian got the assist. Sarnia got the goal back as Korostelev netted his 10th, with the assist going to Salinitri and Mistele, at 11:38.

Sting Notebook:

Both teams were missing one key player due to the WJC selection camps. For Sarnia, the team was without their leading scorer Pavel Zacha and Mississauga was missing Alexander Nylander.

The Sting came into weekend play as the third best defensive team in the Ontario Hockey League in goals allowed (83), behind only the Kitchener Rangers (76) and the Erie Otters (82).

The three stars in order went to Mistele and Lindberg for Sarnia and Burnside for Mississauga.
