(SAVANNAH, Ga.) The Savannah Sand Gnats built an early 4-0 lead, then scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth on their way to an 8-2 win over the Lexington Legends Wednesday night. The Sand Gnats won two of three games in the series, and the Legends now trail first-place Rome by four and one-half games in the South Atlantic League Southern Division standings. The Legends open a four-game series in Rome Thursday night at 7 p.m.

Savannah jumped in front with three runs in the first inning. Matt Reynolds led off with a base hit, and after Gilbert Gomez flied out, Cam Maron walked. A wild pitch by Lexington starter Luis Cruz moved the runners to second and third, and both scored on a double to left field by Brian Harrison. Harrison moved to third on a single by Dustin Lawley and scored on a ground out by Greg Pron.

Harrison hit a solo homer in the third, giving Savannah a 4-0 lead.

The Legends did all their scoring in the fifth. With one out, Jordan Scott singled and Chan Jong Moon reached first when Harrison, the first baseman, bobbled a ground ball for an error. Jordan Kreke struck out, but Zach Johnson doubled to left center field, scoring both runners and cutting the Savannah lead to 4-2. Johnson leads the South Atlantic League with 104 runs batted in.

The score remained 4-2 until the bottom of the eighth. With two outs and the bases empty, Harrison singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Lawley. Pron's single moved Lawley to third, from where he scored on a base hit by Albert Cordero. Charley Thurber's two-run double closed out the scoring.

Savannah starter Marcos Camarena (7-4) allowed four hits and no earned runs in five innings to get the win. Cruz (9-6) suffered his first loss since June 26. He had won four straight decisions.
