ASHEVILLE, NC - Ben Alsup threw a complete game, one-hit shutout and Jordan Ribera had a homer and six RBIs for the Asheville Tourists as they rolled to a 6-0 win over the Charleston RiverDogs in South Atlantic League action at McCormick Field on Wednesday night.
The RiverDogs third straight loss puts their record at 61-57 (22-29 in the second half) on the season. Asheville's third straight win gives them a record of 76-46 (29-23 in the second half).
Ribera (3-4, HR, 6 RBIs) broke a scoreless tie in the third by driving a two-run single into center off pitcher Corey Black (1-1), giving Asheville the early lead. He struck again in the fifth by lifting one over the right field wall for a two-run homer, his ninth of the year.
Two innings later, the Tourists loaded the bases on a single and a pair of walks, bringing up Ribera again. The first baseman picked up his third two-run hit of the night when he smacked a single into left to make the score 6-0.
While Ribera provided the offense, Alsup (12-5) shut down the Charleston lineup. The right-hander started by retiring the first 17 batters in order before issuing a walk in the sixth. The RiverDogs didn't get their first hit until the seventh inning, when Ben Gamel singled with one out. Alsup allowed one more baserunner, walking Ali Castillo in the ninth, but retired the next two batters to close out a spectacular pitching performance.
On Thursday, the RiverDogs will return to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park to open up a four game series with the Augusta GreenJackets. Game one will pit Charleston's RHP Scottie Allen (3-7, 4.62 ERA) against Augusta's RHP Paul Davis (5-6, 3.86 ERA). There will be $1 food and beverage specials in the Ashley View Pub and DJ Natty Heavy will set the mood with the music on Budweiser Thirsty Thursday. It will also be Charleston County Recycling Night as environmental protection is once again a priority at the park.
