CHARLESTON, SC -- The Savannah Sand Gnats pounded out 14 hits and scored six unanswered runs and knocked the Charleston RiverDogs out of first place with a 10-5 victory Friday night in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Designated hitter Devin Ivany led Savannah with a home run and three runs batted in and left fielder Reggie Fitzpatrick paced the 14-hit attack with three as the Sand Gnats took the first game of the four-game set in front of 5,083 fans, the RiverDogs' second-largest crowd of the season.

With the victory, Savannah improves to 18-17 on the season while Charleston falls to 21-14. Combined with Augusta's 6-5 victory over Columbus, the Greenjackets move into sole possession of first place and drops the RiverDogs to second place in the South Division.

Eight Sand Gnats recorded hits and five players had multi-hit outings. Joining Ivany and Fitzpatrick with more than two hits were Luke Montz, Doug Vroman and Steve Mortimer.

Thomas Wilson, who pitched the fifth and sixth innings for Savannah in relief of starter Jon Felfoldi, earned his second win of the season against two defeats as he allowed only one run. Charleston starter Chase Wright, who went 5.1 innings and allowed nine earned runs, suffered his first loss of the season after winning his first two decisions.

The RiverDogs took an early 3-0 lead after three frames on a two-run home run by Yosvany Almario in the second inning and a run-scoring single from Ben Jones.

Savannah responded with a four spot in the fourth inning and with five more runs in the sixth. Highlighting the fourth inning was Ivany's two-run double and a two-run homer by Mortimer, and in the sixth, Ivany had a sacrifice fly and Rogearvin Bernadina knocked a two-run single to right.

Montz led off the Sand Gnats' seventh inning with a solo homer to left center.

Game two of this four-game set continues Saturday at 7:05 p.m. with Daryl Thompson (2-1) throwing for Savannah against Charleston's Eric Hacker (0-1).
