Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC -- Charleston RiverDogs closer Mike Martinez is accompanying his ex-Cal State Fullerton college teammates to the White House this weekend and will not be with the RiverDogs for the first two games of the team's series against Savannah, Friday and Saturday. The 2004 College World Series (CWS) champion Titans are in the nation's capital meeting President George W. Bush today (Friday).
Martinez, the New York Yankees' eighth-round draft choice in 2004, was a pitcher for Fullerton last season when the Titans defeated the University of Texas two games to none in the CWS championship series at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, NE in June. Martinez went 8-3 in 28 games (nine starts) for Fullerton in 2004, compiling a 4.24 ERA in 91.1 innings pitched. He recorded two saves last season.
The players and coaches from last season's Fullerton team were scheduled to take a VIP tour of the White House Friday afternoon and visit with President Bush in the East Room. Martinez is scheduled to fly back to Charleston Saturday.
Martinez, the Rolaids Relief Man Award point standings leader for all minor leaguers in April, currently leads the South Atlantic League in saves (11) and appearances (16). He is 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA for the RiverDogs in 2005. His 11 saves tie him for the most of any minor league player this season.
