Bombers Take Series Opener, 4-3

GREENVILLE, SC - Brett LeVier's tie-breaking, two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Greenville to a 4-3 series opening victory over the Rome Braves Friday night at Municipal Stadium. LeVier's hit came moments after the Braves had tallied a run in the top of the eighth to knot the score. The Bombers snapped a two-game losing streak, raising the club's record to 15-20.

Greenville fell behind in the first inning on third baseman Van Pope's a two-run homer, his first of the season. However, Bombers starter Andrew Dobies would settle down and not allow a run for the remainder of his season-long, seven-inning outing. The lefthander struck out a season-best eight batters and walked just one.

With Dobies in command, the Bombers tied the game in the second inning on Chuck Jeroloman's two-run triple and claimed the lead in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Ian Cronkhite.

Dobies departed holding a 3-2 lead, however he would wind up with a no decision as Rome tied the game off eventual winning pitcher Ryan Schroyer (1-2). With one out in the top of the eighth, Clint Sammons flared a double in front of diving right fielder LeVier. Then with two out, Keith Eichas bounced a single into center field, plating Sammons with the tying run.

Greenville's game-winning rally came off Rome righthander Angelo Burrows (0-1), a former Greenville Braves outfielder who was converted to pitcher last season by the Atlanta organization. John Otness lined a one-out double down the left field line. After Austin Easley struck out, LeVier delivered the winning run with a ground single to center field, scoring Otness easily.

The clubs meet in game two of the four-game series on Saturday at 7:05pm. Bombers lefthander Ian Blackley (1-3) will pitch against Braves righthander Charlie Morton (0-2).

NOTES: In his last 2 starts DOBIES has allowed two earned runs over a combined 14 innings with 12 strikeouts and just 1 walk......OTNESS and CRONKHITE both went 1-for-4, running their respective hit streaks to 7 games......JEROLOMAN's two-run triple broke an 0-29 skid. He also made two tremendous backhaded stops at shortstop......Bombers 2b TONY GRANADILLO had 2 hits and 2 RBI. He is 7-18 (.389) over his last 5 games.....fans will be treated to tremendous fireworks show following Saturday night's game......
