Niesel shuts down Crawdads

(Hickory, NC)--Chris Niesel pitched seven shutout innings and Marshall Szabo homered as the Captains shut out the Hickory Crawdads 4-0 Friday evening at L.P. Frans Stadium.

Niesel (3-2) scattered four hits in his longest outing of the season. He walked three and struck out four. After giving up two hits in the fourth inning, he retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced.

Second baseman Marshall Szabo put the Captains on top, 1-0, with a solo homer in the fourth off Hickory starter Kyle Bloom (1-1). It was Szabo's second of the year.

Bloom also worked into the seventh, yielding only two hits. He allowed a double to Brian Finegan in the seventh. He was lifted in favor of reliever Dustin Craig who promptly surrendered a double to Argenis Reyes that scored Finegan to make it 2-0.

The Captains (19-15) added two more runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Chad Longworth and Szabo.

Kieran Mattison relieved Niesel in the eighth, making his first appearance after missing a week with a sore elbow. He gave up a lead-off single, but retired the next three. Righthander Bo Ashabraner worked the ninth to complete the whitewash.

It was the fourth shutout loss of the year for the Crawdads (15-20).

The Captains have won three straight games and will look to extend that streak to a season-high four in a row on Saturday evening at 7:00 when they play game two against the Crawdads (WELW AM 1330).
