Zebulon, NC --- The Southern League has named Carolina infielder Gaby Sanchez as the Most Valuable Player for the 2008 season.

Sanchez becomes the first Mudcat to win that award in 13 years, and becomes just the third Carolina player to net the honor. Sanchez joins big leaguer Jason Kendall (1995) and Mark Johnson (1994) as the other Mudcats to lay claim to the MVP.

Sanchez, a fourth round selection by the Florida Marlins in 2005 from the University of Miami (FL), is completing what will arguably be the best all-around offensive season in the annals of Carolina Mudcats history. Sanchez is a mere 10 points behind the highest batting average in Carolina's 18-year existence, batting .320 with four regular season games remaining. Sanchez needs seven more hits to establish a club-record for hits in a season, which was set by Emil Brown in 1998 with 154. Sanchez's 88 RBIs are 2nd-most in team history, while his career-high 41 doubles are a single-season record for the Mudcats. Sanchez also leads the league in on-base percentage, is third in hits and second in extra base hits.
