
Mudcats better Smokies

Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC --- The Carolina Mudcats assumed a 5-1 lead before holding off the Tennessee Smokies 5-4 Thursday night in front of 3,956 fans at Five County Stadium.
Carolina has clinched the second half title in the North division, as well as a playoff spot. Carolina will start the playoffs Wednesday, September 3 at first half champion West Tenn.
Tennessee (33-32) scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning when Matt Matulia singled home Jake Fox for an early 1-0 lead. Carolina (40-26) responded with three of their own in the bottom half of the same inning to claim a 3-1 lead. After a lead-off triple to right field by Scott Cousins, Manuel Mayorson hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Four batters later, Chris De la Cruz hit his second double of the game to score Andy Jenkins and Brad Davis.
Aaron Thompson (W, 2-5) pitched seven innings for Carolina, allowing just two runs on eight scattered hits. Thompson also helped his own cause from the offensive side by getting a base hit before leter being driven in by Cameron Maybin.
Marco Carillo (L, 2-2) pitched four innings for Tennessee, allowing six hits and five runs. Matt Avery pitched three innings for Tennessee, allowing just one hit without surrendering any runs.
Tim Wood came on in the eighth for Carolina and allowed two runs for the rallying Smokies. Sam Fuld hit a lead-off double to left field before Doug Deeds smashed a ball over the 20 foot wall in dead center field.
Chris Mobley (S,27) struck out the side in the ninth to break the Carolina single-season record for saves.
Carolina will send Willie Glen (9-4,1.92) to the mound against Esmailin Caridad (7-3,3.33) of Tennessee Friday night at Five County Stadium.
