Mississippi's Todd Redmond Named Southern League Most Outstanding Pitcher
Published on August 28, 2008 under Southern League (SL1) News Release
MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs is pleased to announce that Mississippi Braves righthander Todd Redmond has been named its Most Outstanding Pitcher as voted upon by the league's field managers, radio broadcasters and print media.
Redmond's first season in the Atlanta Braves organization has been one for the record books in Mississippi. Acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates for reliever Tyler Yates in the final week of spring training, Redmond established team records for wins, strikeouts and innings pitched since its move from Greenville in 2005.
Redmond became the Southern League's first pitcher to reach 13 wins this season with a 1-0 victory against Mobile on August 25. He struck out six batters in that game to tie for the league lead in that category with 128. More importantly, that victory brought the Braves closer to a playoff berth that seemed impossible after the first month of the season.
After the Braves posted a Double-A worst 6-20 record in April, Redmond anchored the rotation with a 4-0 record as the club rebounded with a winning mark in May. Redmond celebrated his 23rd birthday with seven strong innings at Chattanooga on May 17, beginning a string of three consecutive winning starts. He sported a 1.35 ERA during that span, allowing only 13 hits in 20 innings.
Selected to participate in the Southern League All-Star Game, Redmond pitched a flawless inning with one strikeout in the midsummer classic on July 14. Four days later, he allowed only one hit in eight innings against Carolina en route to Southern League Pitcher of the Week honors.
Redmond won three consecutive starts in August to match his career high in victories, reducing Mississippi's magic number for clinching the second-half title in the South Division to four in the process. Fourth in the league with a 3.42 ERA with one scheduled start remaining, Redmond has a shot at besting Matt Harrison's team mark of 3.39.
