San Diego Tied For Third In West Division; Only One Point Out Of First

San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO –– The San Diego Gulls just finished a stretch of playing six games in nine nights. Now they're in the midst of a seven-day layoff before busing back up to Bakersfield Saturday. Last week the Gulls finished off their busy schedule with two wins in three games, remaining third in the West Division, but now only one point out of first.

San Diego started its week with a come-from-behind shootout win over the Alaska Aces on Wednesday. The next night, the Gulls welcomed the Florida Everblades and beat them too. The lone setback of the week came Saturday in Bakersfield, where the Condors won an early first-place showdown.

WEEK IN REVIEW:

Nov. 3 vs. Alaska:

Mike Garrow scored the game-tying goal with 4:22 left in regulation and Trevor Koenig was perfect in the shootout, leading the Gulls to a 4-3 victory over the Aces. Alaska jumped ahead 1-0 before San Diego scored back-to-back goals to go ahead 2-1. The Aces, however, reversed the score again with two straight goals before Garrow tied it. In the shootout, Mark Pederson and Billy Tibbetts scored for the Gulls, while Koenig stopped all four Alaska shooters.

Nov. 4 vs. Florida:

The Everblades out-shot the Gulls 46-21, but thanks to some timely offense and Koenig's stingy goaltending the Gulls triumphed 6-2. San Diego jumped out a quick 3-0 first-period lead before Florida got on the board late in the opening frame. The Gulls regained their three-goal lead late in the second and added two more in the third. Koenig, who also allowed an early third-period goal, finished the game with 44 saves. Six different scorers lit the lamp for the Blue and Orange.

Nov. 6 @ Bakersfield:

Koenig was again stellar between the pipes, but this time it wasn't good enough, as the Condors skated to a 4-1 victory. Pederson got the Gulls on the board first early in the opening period, but from there it was all Condors. Bakersfield answered with two quick goals later in the first period and added two more in the third, the last of which came on a penalty shot goal. Koenig finished with 37 saves while rookie netminder Yutaka Fukufuji turned aside 26 shots.
