San Diego Goes A Perfect 3-0-0 Last Week; Moves Into Third-Place Tie

January 17, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO –– A perfect week of hockey has the San Diego Gulls flying high once again. After a five-game winless streak, San Diego has rolled off four straight wins, crept back into third place in the West Division and threaten to move up even more with three games left on its homestand.

The Gulls, who own a 12-3-2 mark at home, entertain the Las Vegas Wranglers twice before closing out the homestand and first half of the season against the Pensacola Ice Pilots. With their three wins last week, they climbed eight games over .500 for the first time this season and move to within nine points of first-place and five points of second-place (as of Monday). Keep in mind that the Gulls have at least two games in hand on all contending teams in the West Division.

WEEK IN REVIEW:

Jan. 13 @ Las Vegas:

The Gulls scored three times in a 63-second span during the first period and netted the game-winner late in the third en route to a 4-3 win in Vegas. Andrew Canzanello, Darren Clark and Chris Lynch netted back-to-back-to-back goals late in the first period, but the Wranglers cut the deficit to one with two straight goals in the second period. Colin Shields scored what proved to be the game-winner late in third, just before Las Vegas made it a one-goal game again.

Jan. 14 @ Long Beach:

Brian Gornick scored twice, Sylvain Deschatelets added two assists and goaltender Eddy Ferhi stopped 26 of 27 shots, leading the Gulls to a 4-1 victory in Long Beach. Scott Borders gave San Diego a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, before Curtis Brown tallied halfway through the second, giving the Blue and Orange a 2-0 lead. That's when Ferhi took over, thwarting a bunch of quality Ice Dog opportunities. Gornick then sandwiched his two goals in between Long Beach's only tally in the third period. The Gulls are now unbeaten in 25 of their last 26 games against the Ice Dogs (24-1-1), dating back to October 2002.

Jan. 15 vs. Louisiana:

Borders' goal 11:38 into the third period broke a 3-3 tie and lifted San Diego to a 4-3 victory over the IceGators. It was a wide-open, back-and-forth game all night long. San Diego drew first blood before Louisiana scored two straight to go ahead 2-1. The Gulls tied it early in the second period, but the IceGators regained their lead shortly after. Nikita Korovkin tied it again 7:30 into the third before Borders gave the Gulls the lead for good with his tally.

PLAYER NOTES:

Brown is in the midst of a seven-game point streak, notching 11 points (3g, 8a) in that span... Gornick has nine goals in his last 14 games... Mike Garrow has earned an assist in six of his last seven games... Sylvain Deschatelets has eight points in his last five games (2g, 6a)... Jonathon Shockey (separated shoulder), Sean Murphy (broken thumb), Guillaume Fournier (concussion-like symptoms) and Trevor Koenig (sore elbow) all remain on the injured list...

TEAM NOTES:

The Gulls have outscored their opponents 16-10 during their four-game winning streak... They are 12-3-2 at home this season and 7-8-2 on the road... San Diego is 2-1-0 against teams outside of its division; with 10 games remaining against non-West Division teams this season... The Gulls, who rank 26th on the penalty kill, have allowed 24 power-play goals in their last 18 games...

UPCOMING GAMES:
