Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
SALEM, VA - In search of their first home win since Memorial Day, the Salem Red Sox turned to spot starter Tom Ebert Tuesday, and the right-hander and his bullpen came through, blanking the Pelicans on four hits while Salem's offense cranked along for a 7-0 victory in the final game of a three-game set Tuesday afternoon at Salem Memorial Ballpark.
After a quiet first four innings on each side in which the teams combined for three hits, Salem broke through against Pelicans starter Wilfredo Boscan with some help from sloppy Pelicans defense. Myrtle Beach's top-ranked defense stumbled to three errors in the fifth, leading to four Red Sox runs, though just one went as earned against Boscan. Zach Gentile, Josue Peley, and David Mailman all smacked singles in the inning for Salem to put Ebert in line for the victory.
Salem's bullpen wouldn't let their starter down as Jeremiah Bayer and Will Latimer combined to keep the Pelicans down behind the right-hander. Ebert (3-3) departed after five innings of shutout, one-hit ball, striking out two while walking one. Behind him, Bayer pitched three solid frames, scattering three Pelicans knocks and striking out a pair while not walking a man.
Boscan (2-4) exited after five innings of his own. The right-hander struggled with command, walking four men while not striking out a single one and allowing five hits. In relief of the righty, southpaw Kasey Kiker allowed two Red Sox tallies in the seventh, and Ryan Kelly one more in the eighth to give Salem its final margin.
The Pelicans only put together four hits on the day, and no Myrtle Beach batter had more than one though Jared Prince and Ryan Strausborger each reached three times, once via a base hit and twice via hit-by-pitches for each man. Latimer pitched the scoreless ninth to close out the victory for Salem. Myrtle Beach's shutout defeat was just its second shutout loss this year and first since its initial road defeat back on April 13 at Frederick.
Wednesday night, the Pelicans open a three-game series against Southern Division rival Kinston at BB&T Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach. The Pelicans and Indians entered Tuesday's action tied atop the Carolina League Southern Division second-half race with 4-1 records before Myrtle Beach's loss. The Pelicans held off the Indians in the closing days of the first half to take the 2011 season's initial playoff spot in the Southern. Tickets for all Pelicans home games can be purchased by visiting the BB&T Coastal Field box office, the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, or by calling (843)918-6000 or (877)918-TIXX.
