June 28, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
The Keys struck first on Tuesday night but were unable to complete the sweep as Frederick fell to Wilmington, 5-2. The loss was the Keys' first to the Blue Rocks at Harry Grove Stadium in 2011.
LHP Nathan Moreau got the night off to a good start as he retired the Blue Rocks in order in the top of the first. RF Steve Bumbry then led off the home half of the first inning with a solo home run to right-center. The Keys had a chance to expand on their one-run lead as they loaded the bases with two outs in the inning but RHP Tim Melville forced DH Adam Donachie to groundout to end the inning.
Wilmington tied the ballgame up in the third inning. With one out, 1B Joey Lewis hit a ball to deep right-center. CF Miguel Abreu took two steps in and then quickly retreated back in effort to make up ground. Abreu got a glove on the ball but could not come down with the catch as Lewis hustled into third with a triple. The next man up, LF Whit Merrifield, drove Lewis home on a sacrifice fly to right field.
CF Yem Prades led off the top of the sixth with a double down the left field line. With the scored still nodded at one, 2B Rey Navarro put a bunt down. Moreau quickly fielded the ball and fired to first. Moreau's throw got away from 1B Tyler Townsend. Moreau's throwing error allowed Prades to score as the Rocks took a 2-1 lead.
Nathan Moreau exited the game following the sixth inning. He allowed two runs on six hits while striking out three and walking one.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Keys looked like they tied the game on a RBI double by 2B Jonathan Schoop. Facing newly inserted RHP Michael Mariot, Schoop chopped a ball down the third base line. Home plate umpire, John Bacon, ruled the ball foul as 3B Dale Mollenhauer had to return to second base. Schoop eventually flew out to center field to end the inning.
Nick Francis put the game out of Frederick's reach when he belted a three-run shot in the top of the eighth inning.
Moreau dropped to 7-6 on the season while Tim Melville improved to 7-6 and Michael Mariot picked up his fourth save of the season.
The Keys closed out their first homestand of the second-half of the season at 3-3. Frederick heads to Lynchburg, VA on Wednesday for the start of a six-game roadtrip. RHP Ryohei Tanaka (5-1, 3.09) gets the nod for game one while the Hillcats will turn to LHP Blaine Sims (2-1, 2.45).
First pitch from City Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
