AA Winnipeg Goldeyes

Salamida Shuts out Saints

August 20, 2013 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

He's been back with the Winnipeg Goldeyes for less than a month this season, but four-year Goldeye Chris Salamida has become the stopper of Winnipeg's pitching rotation.

Salamida allowed just two hits and posted his second complete-game shutout in as many starts Tuesday night, as the Goldeyes downed the St. Paul Saints 5-0 in Minnesota.

While Winnipeg did its part to keep pace in the American Association's wild card race, the out-of-town scoreboard wasn't as kind. The wild card-leading Gary South Shore RailCats remain three games ahead of the Goldeyes after beating the Wichita Wingnuts 7-4 the first game of a doubleheader. The second game between Gary and Wichita is still going on.

After Winnipeg grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ray Sadler doubled in Ryan Scoma, Casey Haerther hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning.

Kevin Moesquit doubled in Haerther in the seventh inning to increase Winnipeg's lead to 4-0.

The Goldeyes added on with three runs in the top of the ninth inning. Luis Alen hit a solo home run for his third dinger of the year, while Moesquit scored on a wild pitch and Amos Ramon tallied on a Fehlandt Lentini fielder's choice.

Haerther, Sadler and Tyler Graham led Winnipeg with a pair of hits each.

In going the distance, Salamida has improved to 5-0 in six starts and became the first Goldeyes pitcher since Roger Luque in 2004 to have at least two complete-game shutouts in a season. Salamida has gone 16 scoreless innings.

"He wants to pitch in the big games and he thrives in that moment," Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea said. "That's why we were so eager to get him back."

The Goldeyes and Saints continue this four-game series Wednesday night. Matt Rusch will take to the hill for Winnipeg against St. Paul's Dylan Thomas. Game time is 7 p.m.
