Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (58-30) lost both ends of a double header to the Gary SouthShore RailCats (50-37) at U.S. Steel Yard on Tuesday night, falling 7-4 in the opener and then 4-3 in the nightcap.

In the opener, Gary scored seven runs, five of which were unearned, in the bottom of the second inning to erase a 2-0 Wingnuts' lead. Craig Maddox led off with a single through the right side and scored two batters later on Brian Kolb's double down the left field line. Drew Martinez reached first on an error by C.J. Ziegler that put runners on the corners. After Zac Mitchell was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Nick Liles poked a two-run single down the right field line that gave the RailCats a 3-2 lead. Adam Klein made it 4-2 with an RBI groundout to shorstop. Mike Massaro drove in Liles with a triple to left-center and then scored the RailCats' sixth run on an errant relay to third base. With two outs and no one on base, Christian Vitters singled up the middle and scored on a double to right-center from Maddox.

Ziegler homered in the top of the third to cut the lead to 7-3.

Wichita rallied in the top of the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate. With the bases loaded and no outs, Jake Kahaulelio hit a sacrifice fly to left that made it 7-4. John Rodriguez roped a line drive towards center field that was snagged by a reaching Liles at second base to turn a game-ending double play.

Chris Smith took a tough complete game loss for Wichita, allowing seven runs, two earned, on six hits in six innings. Smith walked two and struck out three.

Chuck Fontana was assigned the win in relief for the RailCats with two scoreless innings.

Matt Jernstad started game one for Gary SouthShore and allowed three earned runs on seven hits in two and one-third.

Brent Clevlen drove in the game's first run with a two-out, RBI single to left in the top of the first. Earlier in the inning, Kahaulelio tied an American Association single-season record with his 20th hit by pitch.

Cole Armstrong led off the top of the second with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly to left from Kahaulelio that made it 2-0.

The RailCats won the nightcap in extra innings on a one-out, bases loaded single to center from Ryan Babineau. Mitchell led off the inning with an infield hit and took second on a sacrifice from Ryan Brockett. After Klein was intentionally walked, Lincoln Holdzkom relieved Andrew Aizenstadt. Massaro walked to load the bases, setting up Babineau's hit.

Wichita scored early for a second straight game on Kahaulelio's third sacrifice fly of the twinbill in the top of the first.

Massaro hit an inside-the-park-home run with one out in the bottom of the first to tie the game.

A Cristian Guerrero infield single and a Vitters fielder's choice helped the RailCats score two unearned runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead.

Wichita tied the game in the top of the fifth on a two-out, two-run homer to left from Ziegler.

Estevan Uriegas worked two shutout relief innings to earn the win. Aizenstadt took the loss.
