Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary, IN - The RaiCats earned a sweep of the Wichita Wingnuts winning game one, 7-4, and taking game two in walk-off fashion, 4-3. The RailCats improved to 50-37 after Tuesday's action while Wichita dropped to 58-30.

With the pair of victories the RailCats guaranteed themselves at least a .500 season, Greg Tagert's ninth non-losing season in his RailCats career.

It was the second time this season that the RailCats swept Wichita in a doubleheader, the other was June 18th in a day-night affair at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Game 1

Wichita jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Brent Clevlan drove in John Rodriguez who reached on a fielder's choice against RailCats starter Matt Jernstad.

In the top of the second, the Wingnuts added another run when three of the first four batters of the inning singled. Jake Kahaulelio drove in one with a sac fly to left to make it 2-0.

The RailCats came back to take the lead in the bottom of the second. Craig Maddox singled and scored on a Brian Kolb double to make it 2-1. Drew Martinez reached on an error by Wichita first baseman CJ Ziegler and Zac Mitchell was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Nick Liles singled down the right field line to score two and give the RailCats the lead at 3-2.

Adam Klein followed Liles' single with an RBI groundout to score Zac Mitchell. With Liles on second, Mike Massaro hammered a triple to left center and scored on a throwing error by Ryan Khoury. Christian Vitters followed with a single and Craig Maddox doubled off the wall to cap off a seven-run inning for the 'Cats. It was 7-2 RailCats after two innings.

Because of a pair of Wingnuts errors only two runs were earned against starter Chris Smith.

In the third, C.J. Ziegler led off the inning with a long solo home run to bring Wichita within 7-3.

Matt Jernstad went just two and a third innings in a spot start for the RailCats. He allowed three runs on seven hits, no walks, and struck out one. Chuck Fontana followed him with a pair of scoreless innings and earned the victory.

In the top of the seventh, Wichita had the tying run at the plate, but, John Rodriguez lined into a double play to end the game after Ian Durham surrendered a run on a sacrifice fly by Jake Kahaulelio earlier in the inning.

Chris Smith threw a complete game despite allowing seven runs in the game. He took his third loss of the season as the right-hander allowed seven hits, one walk and struck out three.

Game 2

Just like in game one, the Wingnuts scored in the top of the first as Ryan Khoury led off the game with a double. A wild pitch by Stephen Hiscock moved Khoury to third and Jake Kahaulelio drove him in with a sacrifice fly to left. It was his third sacrifice fly of the night.

The RailCats tied it in the bottom of the first when Mike Massaro hit an inside the park home run off Wingnuts starter Justin Klipp. Massaro hit a line drive to center and Brent Clevlan slid for it and missed and watched it roll all the way to the wall.

In the third, the RailCats took the lead with a pair of unearned runs. Shortstop Ryan Khoury dropped a pop up off the bat of Ryan Brockett to begin the inning. Mike Massaro and Ryan Babineau walked to load the bases with one out and Cristian Guerrero reached on an infield single to score Brockett. Brian Kolb reached on a fielders choice to score Massaro and make it 3-1 RailCats.

In the top of the fifth, the Wingnuts tied it when CJ Zeigler took Stephen Hiscock deep to left for a two-run home run. It was Ziegler's eighth home run of the season against the RailCats in 11 games.

Both starters took no-decisions in the game as Justin Klipp had much better results in his second start of the season against the RailCats. In five-plus innings, Klipp allowed three runs, one earned, walked three and struck out five. Stephen Hiscock was removed after seven innings; he allowed three runs on nine hits and a pair of walks. Stephen struck out five and threw 118 pitches.

In the bottom of the ninth, Zac Mitchell led off the inning with an infield single and was bunted to second by Ryan Brockett. The Wingnuts intentionally walked Adam Klein and Wichita brought in Lincoln Holdzkolm to face Mike Massaro. Massaro worked a walk and set up Ryan Babineau with the bases loaded.

Babineau lifted a 2-2 pitch to center field to score the winning run for the RailCats.

Estevan Uriegas earned the win with a pair of scoreless innings of relief. He struck out two and grabbed his first win of 2013.

The RailCats and Wingnuts continue their four-game series tomorrow at 7:10. RHP Junior Guerra (8-4, 3.22 ERA) will throw for Wichita, the RailCats starter is to be announced.
