Saints Smothered by Salamida in 7-0 Loss

ST. PAUL, MN (August 20, 2013) - The St. Paul Saints were left wishing that they had saved some runs from the night before after they were shutout in a 7-0 loss to the Winnipeg Goldeyes in front of 4,126 at Midway Stadium on Tuesday night. One night after racking up 14 runs against Winnipeg pitching, the Saints were limited to a season-low two hits by Goldeyes starter Chris Salamida. The last time the Saints tallied only two hits in a game was July 26th, 2012 in Kansas City.

The Goldeyes drew first blood in the second inning off of Saints starting pitcher Billy Soule when Ryan Scoma and Ray Sadler hit back-to-back doubles to begin the frame. Winnipeg added to that advantage in the fourth when, with one on and two out, Casey Haerther lifted his 10th home run of the season off the scoreboard in left-center to give the Goldeyes a 3-0 lead.

The 3-0 score held until the seventh inning mainly because Salamida was cruising through the Saints lineup for the entire evening. Salamida threw his first career nine-inning complete game shutout, limiting the Saints to just two hits while walking one and striking out four. The Saints left just one man on base and never moved a runner past second base.

The Goldeyes added an insurance run in the seventh inning when Kevin Moesquit ripped an RBI double over Jose Hernandez's head in centerfield to pull further ahead at 4-0.

Just for good measure the Goldeyes piled on in the ninth inning against Matt Meyer. Luis Alen led off with his third home run of the season before Moesquit scored from third on a wild pitch and Fehlandt Lentini drove home Amos Ramon with a fielder's choice groundout to grab the seven run lead.

Billy Soule was handed his first professional loss as he fell to 3-1 on the season. Soule went 6.1 innings allowing four runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out two.

Game three of the series pits the Saints RHP Dylan Thomas (1-5, 9.93) against the Goldeyes RHP Matt Rusch (5-4, 4.36). It is Blame Canada Day presented by Minneapolis Media Institute. The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM and in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
