Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS - On Tuesday night, everything went right for the Sioux Falls Canaries. Everything, that is, until the ninth inning.
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks rallied for three runs on a pair of home runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game, and they went on to beat the Canaries 4-3 in 11 innings at Sioux Falls Stadium.
The Canaries (37-51) built a 3-0 lead through eight innings against the North Division's top team, but it evaporated in a matter of moments in the ninth inning. Against closer Alan DeRatt, Ronnie Bourquin led off with an opposite field solo home run to left field. Nic Jackson then singled, and C.J. Retherford scorched a two-run home run to tie game in a matter of six pitches.
In the 11th inning, Fargo-Moorhead (56-32) loaded the bases on a passed ball, double and intentional walk. A second passed ball allowed Bourquin home for the winning run. Marcos Rodriguez singled with two outs to put the tying run on in the bottom of the 11th inning, but Reggie Abercrombie struck out swinging against Derrick Miramontes to end the game. Miramontes earned his third save of the year.
The loss spoiled a tremendous outing by Canaries starting pitcher Adam Champion. He threw seven shutout innings, scattering just four hits. He walked two and struck out four.
Tim Pahuta was 2-for-5 with three RBI, and he launched his 26th home run in seventh inning. He and C.J. Ziegler of Wichita are tied for the league lead, one shy of matching a team and league record.
DeRatt suffered his fourth blown save of the year and third in his last six outings. Joe Harris (10-3) earned the relief win, and Matt Daly (2-2) suffered the loss.
Game two of the three-game series is at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21 at Sioux Falls Stadium. It's Ladies Night. Ladies can purchase tickets for just $5, and there are drink specials all night. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio KWSN 1230-AM, 98.1-FM and www.kwsn.com.
