Saints Six-Game Win Streak Comes to Screeching Halt with 16-7 Loss to RailCats

ST. PAUL, MN - That's one way for a winning streak to come to an end. The St. Paul Saints gave up 15 runs over the first three innings, including eight in the third inning and a season high 19 hits as they lost 16-7 to the Gary SouthShore Railcats on Saturday night at CHS Field in front of 9,086.

Saints starter Jeff Malm, who gave up just one run over 6.0 innings in his first start of the season against the Railcats, didn't last past the second on Saturday. In the first, the Railcats scored a pair after the first four hitters recorded hits with Alex Crosby reaching on an infield single to short, Andy DeJesus reaching on a double off the right field wall, and RBI singles from Andy Paz and Colin Willis making it 2-0.

The Saints responded with a run in the bottom of the first when Brady Shoemaker doubled with two outs and scored on Jayce Boyd's RBI single to make it 2-1. Boyd finished 3-4 with an RBI.

The floodgates started to open in the second when the Railcats put up five. A fielder's choice ground out by DeJesus plated a run to make it 3-1, Willis added a two-run double and that was followed by an RBI double from Garrett Copeland to make it 6-1. Wilfredo Gimenez tacked on an RBI single to make it 7-1.

The Saints once again answered in the second with two outs. Josh Allen was hit by a pitch and JJ Gould singled to left-center. A single by Richard Prigatano scored Allen and a throwing error by the left fielder Wilson on the play scored Gould to make it 7-3. Max Murphy extended his hitting streak to seven games with an RBI double to make it 7-4.

The game, however, was put away in the third when the Railcats sent 12 men to the plate and scored eight runs. Ryan Schlosser began the inning for the Saints, but couldn't record an out after facing seven batters. He was charged with seven runs (six earned) and gave way to Ryan Boelter. The eighth consecutive hitter to reach, Copelands liner to left off of Prigatano's glove for an error, scored a run. Two batters later an RBI double by Wilson finished the scoring in the inning.

The Saints added back-to-back homers in the bottom of the third, a two-run homer by Dante Bichette Jr, his first of the season, and a solo homer by Kes Carter, his second of the season, made it 15-7. The back-to-back homers were the first of the season for the Saints and the 12th consecutive season the Saints have accomplished the feat. The last time they did it was July 27, 2017 when Shoemaker and Anthony Gallas did it at home against the Sioux City Explorers.

The 19 hits given up by the Saints were the most since they gave up 21 on August 23, 2015 at home against the Sioux Falls Canaries.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Vinny Nittoli (1-0, 0.00) to the mound against RHP Daniel Minor (1-0, 5.40). It is a Memorial Day Celebration featuring Post-Game Monster Food Truck Rally and SPIREworks Super Show.
