St. Paul Saints News Release

WINNIPEG, MB (July 5, 2011) - The St. Paul Saints found out why Andrew Walker is nicknamed "Ace" as he stymied them through eight innings and lost the series finale 7-3 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Tuesday night at Shaw Park.

It looked like the Saints would have Ace Walker's number in the first. Ronnie Bourquin crushed a solo homer off the scoreboard in right-center, his fifth of the season, giving the Saints a 1-0 lead. With two outs Jason Cooper reached on a throwing error by second baseman Price Kendall. Richard Mercado made Kendall pay for the error hitting a two-run homer to right-center, his fifth of the season and giving the Saints a 3-0 lead. Brandon Tripp would single to center, but Alex Garabedian struck out to end the inning and that would be all the offense the Saints would muster.

Walker settled down after the first allowing just two more hits the rest of the way, a single by Steve Mays in the second, and an infield single by Cooper in the sixth. Walker went 8.0 innings allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out six as he tied his manager Rick Forney for second most victories in Goldeyes franchise history.

Saints starter Alberto Rolon cruised through the first, but the Goldeyes got to him in the next three innings. In the second Brian Myrow walked and Jon Weber lined a single off of Rolon, which appeared to shake him up the rest of the way. Luis Alen followed that up with a two-run double and with one out Luis Ott singled home Alen to tie the game at three.

In the third the Goldeyes took the lead for good as Kendall led off the inning with a triple and scored on Kody Kaiser's single. Kaiser stole second and moved to third on a single by Wes Long. Myrow's sacrifice fly have the Goldeyes a 5-3 lead.

In the fourth the Goldeyes put the finishing touches on the game when Alen walked and Justin Bass hit a two-run homer to left, his team leading 10th of the season, giving the Goldeyes a 7-3 lead.

The two teams split the four game series meaning the Saints are right back where they started at the beginning of the series, with a 1.0 game lead on the Goldeyes. The team that scored first in each of the four games wound up losing.

The Saints have Wednesday off and welcome in the Gary SouthShore Railcats on Thursday evening for game one of a four game series beginning at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Edwin Walker (2-2, 4.05). It is Welcome to Zombieland presented by Discover Central Corridor. It is also Big Money Monday presented by St. Croix Casino where fans have a chance to win up to $77,777.
