Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
AMARILLO, Tx.---The Amarillo Sox handed the Shreveport-Bossier Captains just their second sweep of the season with a 14-7 win at National Bank Sox Stadium Tuesday night, outscoring the Captains 45-26 in the three-game set.
Second baseman Matthew Tucker had another terrific offensive night, going 3-for-5 with two triples, a double and three runs. Tucker, who had hit two triples all year coming into the series with the Captains, hit four over the last two games. His six are now second most in the American Association. Tucker went 11-15 in the series with 11 runs. Amarillo slugged 21 hits, 11 of them for extra bases Tuesday night.
The Captains were defeated despite a four-RBI night from Andres Rodriguez, whose ninth inning home run gave him the team lead with seven on the season. Uriak Marquez hit his sixth long ball of the year leading off the fourth inning. Captains left fielder Alex Cowart, who has been used as a pitcher in rare situations this season, pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth.
Amarillo knocked Captains starter Joel Kirsten (L, 3-5) around for a season-high 16 hits and 13 runs (10 earned) in 4.2 innings. Kirsten allowed back-to-back homers to Cyle Hankerd and Lee Cruz in the fourth before being lifted for Captains reliever Mark Haynes. Sox starter Matt Elliott (W, 5-2) pitched seven innings, giving up three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out six.
The Sox got out to a 2-0 lead in the second with two two-out RBIs. Catcher Kevin Butler singled in Van Pope with the game's first run. Then shortstop Jason White hit an RBI double scoring right fielder Tim Alberts. The Captains would tie it in the third on Rodriguez's two-run single but Amarillo would pull away with a seven-run fourth against Kirsten. The Sox sent 11 runners to the plate in the frame, picking up five extra base hits. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double by Fehlandt Lentini and Tucker's first triple of the night, scoring Lentini.
Amarillo's Alberts went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. He was 9-for-15 against the Captains in the series with five runs and seven RBIs. For the Captains, center fielder Robert Perry was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with a run and four RBIs. He had eight RBIs in the series. Catcher Brian Peterson went 2-for-4 with one run scored.
The Captains and Sox now both hold records of 26-24 and are tied for second in the American Association South Division. Both are eight games behind Grand Prairie in the division and 3.5 games behind Winnipeg in the Wild Card race. The Captains send left-hander Ryan DiPietro to the mound Wednesday, July 6 at Ft. Worth as they take on the Cats. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
