Amarillo 17, Shreveport-Bossier 6
The Sox got off to a fast start against the Captains thanks to back-to-back doubles from leadoff CF Fehlandt Lentini and 2B Matthew Tucker that sparked a five-run first inning. Tucker led all players in hits (5), runs (4) and RBI (4) with two doubles and two triples. Lentini scored three runs on two hits in five at-bats. The Sox had an 8-0 lead before Shreveport-Bossier got on the board in the third. And by then, the tone of the game had been set. Amarillo put eight more runs on the board in the final six innings. The Captains put a three spot on the board in the eighth, but it was too little, too late. Sox starting pitcher Travis Lawler allowed three runs on three hits in five innings to pick up his fourth win of the year.
Fort Worth 8, Grand Prairie 3
A three-run John Allen homer in the first inning proved to be the difference in Fort Worth's 8-3 victory over Grand Prairie on Monday. Allen, whose home run total on the season now stands at six, finished the game with four RBI and a run scored to bolster an already impressive 3-for-4 performance. The AirHogs pulled within one run in the sixth on on a solo home run from C Chris McMurray, but the Cats answered back in the bottom of the frame with a run of their own, adding two insurance runs in the eighth. Cats starting pitcher Dwayne Pollock earned the win, striking out eight over seven innings and allowing two runs on four hits and two walks.
Gary SouthShore 8, Sioux Falls 3
Having just seen the Pheasants tie the game for the second time, Gary SouthShore 1B Mike Rohde led off the bottom of the seventh with a purpose - and a big stick. Rohde took the first pitch he saw over the outfield wall to put his team on top for good. A bases-clearing triple from teammate Brad Boyer later in the frame stretched the RailCats lead to four. Rohde finished the game a triple shy of the cycle, going 4-for-4, scoring three runs and batting in two. Sioux Falls managed to get just four hits off RailCats starter Scott Shaw, who threw seven innings and allowed just one run with six strikeouts to pick up the win.
Sioux City 8, Fargo-Moorhead 7
Explorers 2B/RF Derek Schermerhorn had four hits against the RedHawks on Monday, none bigger than his seventh-inning RBI double that proved to be the winning play for Sioux City. The double, Schermerhorn's 10th of the season, produced the third and final lead change of the back-and-forth contest. The first came in flashier form in the third inning when 1B/RF Kent Sakamoto doubled in three runs to put the Explorers on top, 3-2. Sakamoto led all players with five RBI and tied Fargo-Moorhead CF Nic Jackason and 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke for a game-high three hits. Jackson also scored twice and batted in three runs, both Fargo-Moorhead bests.
Kansas City 6, Wichita 3
After allowing three Wichita runs in the second inning, Kansas City starting pitcher Devin Anderson surrendered just four more hits and no runs over the next four while his T-Bones teammates rallied to take a 6-3 victory. In the win, Anderson's fourth of the season, the 6-foot-5 lefty struck out six, all after the three-run second. RF Ray Sadler propelled the offensive surge for Kansas Cit with a three-run homer in the third that tied the score. Sadler went 2-for-5 on the night, one of four T-Bones batters with multiple hits. Wingnuts 2B Jose Duran had a two-run double in the second to highlight a 2-for-4 night.
St. Paul 12, Winnipeg 8
Eight of St. Paul's nine batters Monday night scored at least one run, with the lone exception - LF Jason Cooper - batting in two for good measure. But no Saints player outshined RF Brandon Tripp, who went 3-for-5 with two runs and two doubles. Tripp now has 25 extra-base hits and 39 RBI on the season. The Goldeyes went on top 3-0 in the first. But St. Paul answered with a five-run second that put the club on top for good. Saints starting pitcher Donald Brandt earned his fifth win of the year, allowing four runs on seven hits in six and two-thirds innings.
Lincoln 14, El Paso 9
Saltdogs LF Gavin Dickey doubled in CF Blake Gailein the game's second at-bat, marking the beginning of Dickey's 4-for-6 night in which he was a triple shy of the cycle. The Tallahassee native scored four runs and batted in two, including a solo home run to open the fifth inning. The Saltdogs had put eight runs on the board through just two innings, cruising to a 14-9 victory. Gailen and El Paso 1B Javier Brito tied for second honors behind Dickey with three hits apiece. They also both scored twice. The Diablos put together a two-out rally in the ninth. But after two runs, Lincoln reliever Paul Kross got El Paso DH Kyle Nichols to fly out to center to end the game.
