St. Paul Saints News Release

TOLEDO, OH - The St. Paul Saints were riding their longest winning streak in their franchise's history against the Toledo Mud Hens going into Thursday night's game. They had won the last three games against a team they've had trouble against. That streak was snapped in a 5-2 loss at Fifth Third Field.

Matt Wallner got things started for the Saints in the first with a double to left and then advanced to third when the throw into the infield missed everyone. Chris Williams' sacrifice fly scored Wallner giving the Saints a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the inning the Mud Hens tied it as Simeon Woods Richardson struggled with his control. After a one out single from Ali Sánchez, Woods Richardson walked three straight to force in a run tying the game at one. Woods Richardson, however, got out of the inning with a strikeout and a groundout to avoid further damage.

The Mud Hens took a 2-1 lead in the third as Sánchez led off with a single to center. Zack Short hit a hard ground ball to short, but the Saints were only able to get the lead runner. With two outs, Andre Lipcius doubled to left scoring Short. Woods Richardson went 5.0 innings allowing two runs on three hits while walking three and striking out seven.

In the fifth, the Saints knotted the game at two. With one out, Andrew Bechtold singled to right, Elliot Soto doubled him to third, and a groundout by Michael Helman scored Bechtold.

Brock Stewart made his Saints debut in the sixth and led off the inning by striking out Daz Cameron, but strike three went through the legs of catcher the catcher Williams allowing Cameron to reach. That proved costly because with two outs, Jamie Westbrook doubled him home giving the Mud Hens a 3-2 lead.

The Mud Hens grabbed some breathing room in the eighth. With one out, Cameron walked and moved to second on a single from Lipcius. Brendan Davis then lined a single into left scoring Cameron. Davis took second on the throw home and Williams' throw to second tailed away from Helman and glanced off his glove into right-center allowing Davis to score making it 5-2.

The Saints managed just five hits, but four of them were doubles by Wallner, Mark Contreras, Soto and John Andreoli.

The same two teams meet in game four of the six-game series at 6:05 p.m. (CT) on Friday at Fifth Third Field. The Saints send RHP Jordan Balazovic (0-6, 8.55) to the mound against Mud Hens LHP Ricardo Sanchez (7-5, 4.81). The game can be seen on MiLB.TV and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
