St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (August 18, 2010) - There is a good chance a future professional baseball player is currently playing on a local youth field near you. The St. Paul Saints and Ryan Companies are hoping to ensure that he or she has the facilities beneficial to the growth of that dream.
On Saturday, August 21, Saints players and coaches, along with front office members, will team up with Ryan Companies to fix up El Rio Vista Recreation Center as they put together a baseball diamond. Volunteers from both organizations will build a pitching mound, place dirt on the infield, measure the baselines and place fencing where needed. They will also focus on the beautification of the area with flowers, tress, mowed grass, and other details to make the Recreation Center stand out.
"This is the perfect project for the Saints and Ryan Companies," said Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Derek Sharrer. "They know building; we know baseball. We look forward to working on the facility and creating a place that future baseball players can call their home field."
The El Rio Vista Recreation Center has three youth baseball/softball fields, two large gymnasiums, a weight and fitness room, a dance studio and a large walking track. Work will begin at 8:00 a.m. and continue until approximately 12:30 p.m. Saints two-legged mascot Mudonna will appear at a special cookout celebration following the project.
Many locations were being considered for the project, but with the recommendation of the City of Saint Paul Parks and Recreation Department, El Rio Vista Recreation Center was a clear first choice.
"It is a true pleasure to work with a great organization like the Saints and to give back to the St. Paul community," said Ryan Companies Director of Civil Engineering Jared Olson. "We are looking forward to fixing up the park and having a little fun and laughter with the Saints and the neighborhood.
In 2008, the Saints and Ryan Companies worked to fix Edgecumbe Park in St. Paul. They cleared base paths, rebuilt home plate, cleared the field of debris and leveled the infield dirt.
El Rio Vista Recreation Center is located at 179 E. Robie St. in St. Paul next to the Paul and Sheila Wellstone Center. The project will begin at 8:00 a.m. and continue into the early afternoon before players and staff return to the ballpark for the evening's game against the Lincoln Saltdogs at 7:05 p.m.
