Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 8-3 to the Sioux City Explorers at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday night.

Sioux City hit two-run home runs in consecutive innings to build a 5-1 lead that Wichita could not overcome. The Wingnuts committed five errors and allowed four unearned runs.

With the game tied 1-1, Eric Williams was hit by a pitch leading off the top of the third and scored on the next pitch when Dustin Jones hit a line drive home run to left off of Wingnuts' starter Adam Cowart.

Ray Serrano doubled down the left field line to lead off the fourth against Cowart. After Steve Pearson flied out to shallow right field, Derek Schermerhorn hit a two-run homer to left on a high flyball that just cleared the wall to make it 5-1 Sioux City.

Wichita rallied in the bottom of the seventh against starter Mikael Ryder. Carlos Rivera led off the inning with a solo home run down the right field line that landed beyond the reach of a leaping Tim Alberts. It was Rivera's second home run of the game. The first baseman hit a solo shot leading off the second against Ryder that tied the game after Darrick Hale drove in an unearned run in the top of the inning to give Sioux City a 1-0 lead.

Ryder retired Raul Gonzalez on a groundout to second before Jorge Delgado lined a single to center, extending his hitting streak to 16 games. Michael Bell was hit by a pitch and Ryder was taken out in favor of Eddie Delacruz. Jeff Christy grounded a single through the right side to cut the lead to 5-3, but Delacruz got Josh Horn to hit into an inning-ending double play to escape further trouble in the seventh.

Ryder earned the win, allowing three earned runs in 6.1 IP on five hits. The Explorers took advantage of three Wingnuts' errors in the top of the eighth to break the game open. With Jacob Wiley on the mound, Schermerhorn led off with a groundball to third that Bell threw down the right field line, allowing Schermerhorn to reach second. Darrick Hale laid down a bunt to the right side that rolled all the way to the outfield and allowed Schermerhorn to score.

Alberts singled on a line drive to center before Bell picked up a bunt from Jones along the third base line. Bell threw high to first, pulling Cesar Suarez off the bag to load the bases with no outs. Wiley recorded the first out of the inning on a force play at home on a groundball to second from T.J. Bohn. Dustin Pease came in for Wiley and allowed a run to score on an error charged to Horn at shortstop. Kent Sakamoto drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center.

Cowart took the loss, going 3.2 IP and allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits. Cowart walked one and struck out three. Luke Massetti pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in long relief. The Wingnuts bullpen combined for 5.1 innings without allowing an earned run.
