St. Paul Saints News Release
The good news for the St. Paul Saints is they have just five games remaining on the road. The bad news is if they don't win any of them they can forget about any hope of making the playoffs as they lost their ninth consecutive game away from home, a 12-2 defeat at the hands of the Sioux Falls Pheasants at Sioux Falls Stadium on Wednesday night.
The onslaught began in the first inning as the Pheasants perfected the art of bloopers and bleeders. Joe Anthonsen led off with a ground ball to third that Steve Butler lost in the sun and Anthonsen reached on the single. Tim Hutting followed by reaching on a fielding error by shortstop Steve Mays. With one out Beau Torbert blooped a single to right scoring Anthonsen giving the Pheasants a 1-0 lead. After an intentional walk to Brandon Sing loaded the bases, Trevor Lawhorn looped a single over the glove of second baseman Brandon Carter to knock home two making it 3-0. With two outs back-to-back RBI singles by Kevin Carby and Eddy Rodriguez made it 5-0.
In the second the Pheasants made it 7-0 as Tim Hutting led off with a single to left. Reggie Abercrombie walked and Torbert drove home his second run of the night with a single to right-center. A double play ground out by Sing scored Abercrombie.
The Saints got a run back in the third as Steve Butler led off with a double to right-center extending his hitting streak to a career high 11. With one out Josh Alley singled him to third and with two outs Ole Sheldon singled off the wall to score Butler making it 7-1. Butler finished the night 2-4 with a double and a run scored.
In the fourth the Saints got as close as they would all night long when Jason Cooper hit a solo homer to left, his 10th of the season, to make it 7-2. Brent Krause and Josh Burrus followed with back-to-back singles, but the Saints couldn't score them.
In the fifth the Pheasants plated two more when Hunter Jobes doubled and Rodriguez hit a two-run homer to left, his 13th of the season to make it 9-2.
Saints shortstop Steve Mays pitched the ninth and was touched up for three runs on a solo homer from Hutting, his fifth of the season and a two-run homer by Lawhorn, his 16th of the year.
The Saints look to end their nine game road losing streak in the finale of the three game series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Saints send RHP Jason Godin (6-6, 5.49) to the mound against Pheasants RHP Ryan Shaver (7-1, 4.45). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
