SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Beau Torbert went 4-for-5 on Wednesday night, breaking the nine-year-old team hits record and pacing the Sioux Falls Pheasants to a 12-2 thumping of the St. Paul Saints.
Torbert, the slugger who has laced 33 doubles and belted 21 home runs this season, collected his 137th hit of the year by beating out an infield chopper to shortstop Steve Mays. It was Torbert's third hit of the evening, and it broke Charles Peterson's record of 136 hits set in 2001. The Pheasants tallied five runs in the frame and never looked back on the way to their second win in the series. Torbert has raised his league-best average to a stratospheric .397 along with 91 RBI.
With the win, the Pheasants regained a one-half game lead in the second half division race after Wichita lost to Sioux City, 8-3. The Pheasants improved to 24-13 in the second half and 56-29 overall.
