Red Deer Rebels News Release

RED DEER, AB - Jesse Wallin, Vice-President of Hockey Operations/Head Coach of the Red Deer Rebels Hockey Club, announced today at the Western Hockey League Awards in Edmonton that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has won the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as the WHL Rookie of the Year.

Nugent-Hopkins finished with 65 points this season (24-41-65) and was tied for fourth in WHL Rookie scoring with Emerson Etem of the Medicine Hat Tigers. He was second in Rebels scoring behind Willie Coetzee and tied for the team lead with 11 power play goals. Nugent-Hopkins takes the award, as voted on by WHL General Managers and Coaches, over Western Conference nominee Shane McColgan of the Kelowna Rockets.

This is the second time that a member of the Red Deer Rebels has won this prestigious award. Matt Ellison captured the honors in 2002-03 and he also won the Canadian Hockey League Rookie of the Year Award that year. The CHL Awards are announced at the Memorial Cup.

The Red Deer Rebels made Ryan Nugent-Hopkins the first overall selection of the 2008 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League in 2008-09 as a member of the Vancouver North West Giants.
