Spurgeon Is WHL's Most Sportsmanlike Runner-Up

Calgary, AB - Spokane Chiefs defenseman Jared Spurgeon was the runner-up for the WHL's Brad Hornung Trophy, the award that goes to the league's Most Sportsmanlike Player. Spurgeon was the Western Conference's nominee and finished behind the Moose Jaw Warriors Jason Bast for the league honor.

Spurgeon finished the season, his fifth with Spokane, with a career high in points. In 54 games he had 8 goals, 43 assists and 51 assists. The 20-year-old has played 266 career games in Spokane and has 37 goals, 133 assists, 16th in franchise history, the fourth most for defensemen and 170 points. He finished his career as a two time winner of the team's John "Hitman" Hern Defenseman of the Year Award and Players' Player honor. He earned the club's Ken Rabel Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year at the end of this season. In February, Spurgeon was named as one of the franchise's Top 25 Chiefs in 25 Years.

The Brad Hornung Trophy was one of the post- season awards the WHL presented on Wednesday, April 28th at the WHL Awards Luncheon held in Edmonton, Alberta.
