Tri-City Americans News Release
KENNEWICK, WA - The Tri-City Americans are pleased to announce that the Western Hockey League selected the 2009-10 Americans as this year's Scholastic Team of the Year during the 2010 WHL Awards luncheon today at the Fantasyland Hotel in Edmonton, Alberta. Accepting the award on behalf of the Americans was Governor/General Manager Bob Tory and the team's Education Advisor, Kirsten Kramer.
The award, which recognizes the club that achieves the highest overall academic performance during the regular season, has been a handed out annually since the 1999-00 season. It marks the first time that a Tri-City club has won the honor.
"The foundation of the WHL's Educational philosophy is to encourage all players, both in high school and those eligible for post-secondary courses to broaden their life experiences through education," explained Kramer. "Our players did an exceptional job with not only maintaining a solid grade point average, but also seeking post-secondary opportunities and committing themselves to not just hockey but their education as well."
"This truly is a team award and the organization couldn't be more please with their success both on the ice and in the classroom," Tory said. "It is a great honor and something the players should take a great deal of pride in as nothing is more important than their education."
Tri-City had 17 of their 24 players that were involved in scholastic activities, either attending Kamiakin High School, ESL tutoring or other post-secondary class work. Additionally, a remarkable 14 of those 17 student athletes were featured on their respective honor rolls.
Past Tri-City WHL Award winners include Stu Barnes ('88-'89 MVP), Daymond Langkow ('94-'95 Top Scorer), Brian Boucher ('96-'97 Goaltender), Don Hay ('98-'99 Coach of the Year & Executive of the Year), Carey Price (06-07 Goaltender), Chet Pickard (07-08 and 08-09 Goaltender), Don Nachbaur (2007-08), Bob Tory (06-07 and 07-08 Executive of the Year), Taylor Procyshen (08-09 Humanitarian).
