Connauton Signs With Canucks; Bouma Joins Heat

Vancouver, BC - The Vancouver Canucks announced today that they have signed defenseman Kevin Connauton to an entry level contract.

Connauton played the 2009-10 season with the Vancouver Giants, and Head Coach Don Hay says he was an integral part of the team's success.

"Kevin has had a great year with the Giants and improved as the season went along," said Hay. "He was a very reliable player for us all season. He was a big factor in our success this year, and we congratulate him on his first pro contract."

This past season, Connauton set the Giants single season records for points by a defenseman with 72 and goals by a defenseman with 24, establishing those records will playing in 69 of the Giants 72 games. He also ended the season tied for the league lead in points by a defenseman and was named a WHL Western Conference First Team All-Star.

This was the first year in the WHL for the Edmonton native who played college hockey previously. He was drafted 83rd overall by the Canucks in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

In other Giants news, Captain Lance Bouma has been assigned by the Calgary Flames to join the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League. The Heat will begin the second round of the playoffs in Hamilton against the Bulldogs on Thursday night, Bouma will join the team Thursday in Hamilton.

The Giants are also preparing for the WHL Bantam Draft, that will take place tomorrow in Edmonton. The Giants will select 13th in round one. They do not have picks in rounds two, five and 8, but will have choices in all other rounds, with 2 picks in round 13.
