Russ Smith Leads Energy to Victory over BayHawks

Erie, PA - The Iowa Energy (18-17) won 96-92 over the Erie BayHawks (15-22) Saturday night at Erie Insurance Arena.

The Energy were led by Memphis Grizzlies assignee Russ Smith with a game-high 31 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Willie Reed added a double-double with 27 points and 20 rebounds. Kalin Lucas added 20 points. Only six Energy players would score in tonight's game. The BayHawks were led by Seth Curry with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Iowa and Erie would exchange the lead two times during the first quarter. Willie Reed got the game going for the Energy, scoring 14 of the team's 23 first quarter points. The BayHawks were led by Peyton Silva with six points as they led the Energy 25-23 heading into the second quarter. The BayHawks would lead most of the second quarter as they opened up a nine-point lead over the Energy. Iowa would fight back to tie the game 48-48 at halftime with ten points from Kalin Lucas in the quarter.

Smith came alive for the Energy in the second half, scoring 23 points to help lead the Energy. The Energy led 69-64 heading into the fourth quarter. Iowa was able to briefly extend the lead to ten points in the fourth. The BayHawks had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds with a tip-in. The basket was no good and the Energy recovered the rebound. Two late free-throws by Damien Wilkins sealed the 96-92 victory for the Energy.

Iowa returns home Sunday, March 8 at 3pm against the Reno Bighorns for Faith and Family Night. Tickets are only $10.71 and include a hot dog, pop and popcorn.
