Rapid City Rush News Release
(Loveland, CO) - In an afternoon contest on Valentine's Day, the Rapid City Rush found themselves in another back and forth game, but this time, the Rush dropped their fourth shootout of the season. After trailing by two after the first period, the Rush stormed back with three goals in the second, but the Colorado Eagles came away with a 7-6 shootout win. The loss snaps Rapid City's seven game win streak, but extends the Rush point streak to 10 games.
With the first powerplay chance of the game, the Eagles were able to get on the board first when a cross-ice pass was one-timed home by Riley Nelson for a 1-0 lead. One minute later, the Rush would answer with a powerplay goal of their own as Brendon Hodge's wrist shot made its way through a screen for his team leading 9th powerplay goal of the season. Less than 30 seconds later, the Rush would take their first lead of the contest with the 10th goal of the season from Derek LeBlanc. Just over a minute later, the Eagles would strike with their second powerplay goal, this time from Ed McGrane to tie the contest at 2. Keeping the momentum going regained the lead at the 9:46 mark with a goal from Kevin Ulanski. After the Ulanski goal, Danny Battochio was relieved by Miguel Beaudry for the remainder of the contest. Then with 55 seconds left, Colorado extended their lead to two with an even strength goal to make it 4-2 heading into the intermission.
The Rush would battle back in the second period with three unanswered goals beginning with a tally just 18 seconds in. Needing just 8 seconds on the powerplay, Colt King buried his 18th of the season to cut the lead in half. Then at the 2:47 mark, Scott Wray extended his point streak to nine games and netted his team-leading 25th of the season to tie the contest. Finally, at the 8:18 mark, a strong forecheck by Hodge caused a turnover and taking advantage, scoring the go-ahead goal, was Brendan Cook. The lead wouldn't last long as Ryan Tobler tied the game again just 55 seconds after the Cook goal to make it 5-5 less than half way through the game.
The Eagles needed only 1:37 into the third to take the lead, this time it was Ed McGrane scoring his second goal and third point of the game. Rapid City climbed back with the 12th goal of the season from Blaine Jarvis to make it a 6-6 tie.
For the first time this season, the two teams headed to extra time, and with neither side finding the winner in overtime, the game was headed to a shootout. Nelson, Ulanski, and McGrane would all tickle the back of the twine for Colorado, while Andrew Penner would foil 3 of the 4 Rapid City shooters he faced, allowing only Luke Erickson to score on a wrister top glove side. With the loss, the Rush dropped their fourth shootout in five attempts this season.
